Miami Dolphins Tales From The Deep
Tony Nathan broke racial barriers at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama before helping legendary coach Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide capture a National Championship in 1978. The following year, he was a third-round draft choice of the Miami Dolphins and made an immediate impact, garnering First Team All-Pro honors as a rookie kick returner. Nathan played nine seasons for the Dolphins, starting at running back in Super Bowls XVII and XIX, however he is best remembered for his role in the famed “hook and lateral” play in which he scored on a toss from Duriel Harris in a 1981 Divisional Playoff contest against the San Diego Chargers. In the Tank, Tony remembers that popular play and draws comparisons to the Dolphins recent “Miami Miracle.” He also shares stories about Bear Bryant, Don Shula and his first night in Miami at the Pink Flamingo Hotel.
