When you were a little kid, you wanted gold stars in school.  When you got older, you still wanted them because they made you invincible, or perhaps because you needed more to open the door to Bowser.  But before all that, in an era from which nobody is still alive, gold stars meant you or a family member died at war.  You don't want that.
