wasn't the best book I've ever listened to!
it took a long time to get into and I didn't really enjoy it I'm afraid. certainly wouldn't share it!

Really enjoyed this book and the narration was very strong. I would recommend this book.
    Amazing
I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this , I could not fault it. Highly recommended.
    A decent book
I thought this was a very well written and researched book. I think it is the best of the two books that Fiona Neill has on audible - the other 'The Good Girl' - has a different storyline but many similarities in the characters. The Betrayals has a well-constructed storyline, right until the last line, and I thought it was excellent. I would have written a better review had I not read the Good Girl too.
    not for me sorry
some will like it but I didn't. Binned Half way through then went back...wish I hadn't

  • The Shape of Water Audiobook by Andrea Camilleri
Please open https://hotaudiobook.com ONLY on your standard browser Safari, Chrome, Microsoft or Firefox to download full audiobooks of your choice for free.
    Title: The Shape of Water
    Subtitle: Inspector Montalbano, Book 1
    Author: Andrea Camilleri
    Narrator: Mark Meadows
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-10-17
    Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
The Shape of Water is the first in Andrea Camilleri's wry, brilliantly compelling Sicilian crime series featuring Inspector Montalbano.
The goats of Vigàta once grazed on the trash-strewn site still known as the Pasture. Now local enterprise of a different sort flourishes: drug dealers and prostitutes of every flavour. But their discreet trade is upset when two employees of the Splendour Refuse Collection Company discover the body of engineer Silvio Luparello, one of the local movers and shakers, apparently deceased in flagrante at the Pasture. The coroner's verdict is death from natural causes - refreshingly unusual for Sicily.
But Inspector Salvo Montalbano, as honest as he is streetwise and as scathing to fools and villains as he is compassionate to their victims, is not ready to close the case - even though he's being pressured by Vigàta's police chief, judge and bishop.
Picking his way through a labyrinth of high-comedy corruption, delicious meals, vendetta firepower and carefully planted false clues, Montalbano can be relied on, whatever the cost, to get to the heart of the matter.
The Shape of Water is followed by the second in this phenomenal series, The Terracotta Dog.
    Members Reviews:
    Really sad
Would you listen to The Shape of Water again? Why?
Been waiting to have all the Montalbano novels on Audible for years. Had heard some narrated by Daniel Philpott which were good. This narrator is just awful! He has a lovely voice but no feel for the books at all and has little ability to do a range of voices. Still love the stories but whoever let this guy narrate the second novel when they heard how badly he did the first made a bad call!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Shape of Water?
Story just as great as always but as already stated hard to find a high point in a poor narrative performance.
How could the performance have been better?
    Another narrator!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, for the story.

With Kathy Reichs, listeners know that they are in the hands of an expert. As a forensic anthropologist, one of only 82 forensic anthropologists ever certified by the American board, Reichs' real-life expertise has given her novels an authenticity that most other crime novelists would kill for. From teaching FBI agents how to detect and recover human remains to separating and identifying commingled body parts in her lab, no one is better qualified to write about what it's really like to catch the killer and solve the crime.
    Members Reviews:
    Well read but cliched
I long for a thriller with a detective or PI who isn't tortured and unable to sleep. I'm sure most readers (or listeners) can deal with a story where the lead has a normal-ish life and still manages to solve a crime or derail an evil plot.
    Implausible story
I couldn't finish this and will return it. I usually like Kathy Reichs but the story line was totally implausible and the narrator dull
    Engaging but slow
I really enjoy this author but on this occasion i found the progreesion of the story a little slow.

    Publisher's Summary:
    Small town. Big Secret.
An unforgettable debut that brings the darkness in an Australian country town vividly to life as it slowly reveals its devastating secrets.
In the long, hot summer of 1989, Ben and Fab are best friends. Growing up in a small country town, they spend their days playing cricket, yabbying in local dams, wanting a pair of Nike Air Maxes and not talking about how Fab's dad hits him or how the sudden death of Ben's next-door neighbour unsettled him. Almost teenagers, they already know some things are better left unsaid.
Then a newcomer arrives in the Wimmera. Fab reckons he is a secret agent, and he and Ben stake him out. Up close, the man's shoulders are wide and the veins in his arms stuck out, blue and green. His hands are enormous, red and knotty. He looks strong. Maybe even stronger than Fab's dad. Neither realises the shadow this man would cast over both their lives.
Twenty years later Fab is still stuck in town, going nowhere but hoping for somewhere better. Then a body is found in the river, and Fab can't ignore the past any more.
Wimmera is the 2016 Winner of the Crime Writers' Association Debut Dagger.

    Publisher's Summary:
Action thriller by the classic adventure writer set in the Middle East.
When film tycoon Robert Hellier loses his daughter to heroin, he declares war on the drug peddlers, the faceless overlords whose greed supplies the world with its deadly pleasures. London drug specialist Nicholas Warren is called upon to organise an expedition to the Middle East to track down and destroy them - but with $100 million worth of heroin at stake, Warren knows he will have to use methods as deadly as his prey....
    Critic Reviews:
"As long as meticulous craftsmanship and honest entertainment are valued, and as long as action, authenticity, and expertise still make up the strong framework of the good adventure/thriller, Desmond Bagley's books will surely be read." (Reginald Hill, Twentieth Century Crime and Mystery Writers)
"Bagley is a master storyteller." (Daily Mirror)
"Mr Bagley has no equal at this sort of thing." (Sunday Mirror)
"Bagley in top form." (Evening Standard)
    Members Reviews:
This is standard adventure fare but readable
The daughter of a mega-rich film tycoon dies from a drug overdose. Hell-bent on revenge against the people who traffic the drugs, the tycoon enlists the help of a world renown Doctor who is an expert on drug addiction. The Dr forms a team to go to Iraq and stop a huge drug trafficking operation.
To be honest, the story is that implausible as has been pointed out by the earlier reviewers. Does this mean the book is rubbish? No, it is solidly written, fast-paced and fairly enjoyable to read. It is an old school adventure book written by one of the best exponents of that art, Desmond Bagley.
Put aside your sense of disbelief and enjoy the book for what it is worth, simple fare but enjoyable.
    Bagley's weakest book
When wealthy film tycoon Sir Robert Hellier's daughter dies of a heroin overdose, Hellier pressures her physician Nick Warren for answers. Warren, a doctor who prescribes "clean" heroin and provides a safe and sterile environment for users to inject, has developed a close relationship with drug addicts, and knows more about the ins-and-outs of the heroin trade than most people. Hellier wants the trade smashed at any expense, and offers Warren unlimited finances to use his insider knowledge against a major international drug ring. Initially reluctant, Warren is worn down by professional interest and personal circumstances, and assembles a rag-bag team of friends and specialists to travel to the Middle East. Through a combination of deceit and violence, can this eclectic bunch infiltrate and bring down the drug ring, and destroy the heroin supply at its source?
I am a huge fan of Desmond Bagley's work (see my other mostly positive reviews of his books on Amazon), but 'The Spoilers' is easily his worst book, by a considerable margin. The fundamental problem with this book is that the plot just requires too much suspension of disbelief. The idea that an ordinary doctor, no matter how sympathetic to addicts, would have knowledge that the most well-resourced international police forces wouldn't is hard to accept for a start. But even allowing this, we then have Warren turning into a quasi James Bond character, travelling to some of the most dangerous corners of the Middle East, blowing up drug factories, fighting pitched battles in caves, and so on.

Not all is as it seems!!
Patrick, Jimmy and his mom, barely escaped the Kurtain Motel with their lives and went on the run from the Sin eater. They found a tiny town called Refuge, and it seemed perfect for them. But nothing is as it seems and Patrick's normal life is about to come crashing down again!!
Now this was some seriously twisty read. The plot was awesome!!! We start with seeing Patrick having a good life. He is working in the Post Office and life is good, but the priest gives him the creeps and seems to be obsessed with getting people to "confess". Something about this seems very familiar to Patrick but he isn't sure what. Meanwhile we get glimpses back into the Kurtain Motel. Initially this is a little confusing but it starts to come together and you find your mind blown. I really didn't see that coming!!!
Again, we have the same characters with others thrown in, but this time it felt like we got more debt to them and got to know them a little better. They were more developed and I was able to become more invested in them. Plus I liked getting to know Jimmy more!! I was also so happy to see Patrick live a good, happy life. He has grown on me and I was rooting for him!!
In all, this was an awesome read. I loved the setting and how mysterious and intriguing Refuge and the people were. The twist was great too and I can not wait to see what happens next!!
Thom Bowers did a better job with this one because the majority of the story revolves around Patrick and Jimmy. He brought the characters and atmosphere to life and knows how to tell a creepy tale!
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
    Refuge
This was truly a twisted tale ! It kept me guessing until the very end ! I cant wait for the third audiobook .
    Patrick and jimmy
Good b took I have enjoyed another one of his books so many timers you can not find good books but this is another one.
    It's not what you think....
I enjoyed the narration it was easier on the second book because the narrator was the same.
After leaving Kurtain Motel, Paul, Jimmy, and Tara, settle in the small town of Refuge. Paul finds a job, Jimmy goes to school, and Tara is a homemaker.
After six months Paul notices Tara acting differently and Jimmy becoming more withdrawn.
Paul starts having nightmares and then seeing the dead while waking. Jimmy lets Paul know that he does not like it in Refuge.

Tyler Matthews is desperate for change. Sick of his life and plagued by alcoholism, he makes the decision to divorce his wife, sell everything he owns and travel the world to try to find focus and rid himself of his addiction. Eventually arriving on the sun drenched shores of Australia and still plagued by his demons, he has spent all his savings and is facing the prospect of having to return to his old life. It is here that he meets two men with an outlandish story about a horde of sunken drug money in an area known as the Devil's Triangle - Australia's answer to its Bermuda namesake and said to be the lair of a terrifying monster of the deep.
Offered a share of the fortune if he helps retrieve it, Tyler agrees to go with the men to the location, skeptical and thinking only of prolonging his journey of self-discovery. He will learn, however, that this particular urban legend is real, and they encounter a giant of the seas, the previously thought to be extinct Megalodon which makes its home within the area of the Devil's triangle. Barely escaping with their lives, the three men wash up on an isolated island - no more than a rocky outcrop with no vegetation, fresh water of food sources. As desperation to survive intensifies, horrifying decisions will be made that will illustrate how man is sometimes the most violent predator on earth and when left with no option will do anything, even the unthinkable, in order to survive.
