Transformational Leadership: From the Insight Out episodes

  • Effective Empathy

Transformation Tip: “Empathy is like giving someone a psychological hug.” - Lawrence J

    Empathy Strength:

    • You intuitively feel something before it is expressed
    • You will feel others’ emotions as if they are your own
    • Instinctive and powerful
    • Can help translate the functional to the relational

How to manage the empathy talent well:

    • Be in an emotionally healthy environment
    • Need to have good emotional boundaries

    Blind Spots:

    • Can turn co-dependant
    • The need to feel needed
    • Abusers will prey on and take advantage of this talent
    • People’s emotions tend to stick to you
    • Mistake other’s emotions as your own

    Transformation Application:

1.) If you don't naturally have empathy: before you talk, imagine what it’s like in the other person’s shoes.

2.) If you do have empathy: Practice at the end of your day or after you’ve had an empathetic moment, reminding yourself that it is not your issue, and release their emotions off of yourself.

  • Developers: How To Be A Great Mentor

Transformation Tip: “The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership” -- Harvey Firestone

    • Developer Talent
      • Recognize and cultivate the potential in others
    • Intrinsic Needs
      • Need to work with people or organizations that desire growth
      • Their potential needs to be recognized
    • Blindspot
      • You see potential in people, but they have to want to change as much as you want it for them
      • If you become overly invested in someone else’s development you can become co-dependent
        • Need to feel needed
      • You forget to develop yourself when you’re busy developing others
    • A mature developer
      • Looks for opportunities to grow
      • Grows talent in other people
      • Becomes a teacher, a coach, a mentor

Transformation Application: Ask yourself: are there people in my life that I want more for than they want for themselves? Ask yourself if it is still worth developing them. If you are not a developer - go out of your way to thank someone who has developed you.

  • The Power of Connectedness

Transformation Tip: “Realize that everything connects to everything else” - Leonardo Divinci

People with connectedness strength see links between things which helps bring meaning and value to situations.

    • Qualities of someone with strong connectedness
      • Nonlinear
      • They see unity in humankind
      • Spiritual
      • Intuitiveness
      • Bridge-builders
    • How to manage this talent
      • It is important to be part of a team with a shared vision
      • They will not demand things but suggest things
        • Need to feel heard by those around
    • Potential blind spots
      • When others get bad news you may try to jump to the big picture too quickly instead of offering comfort and understanding
      • If someone isn’t getting what you are saying - sometimes you need to back off because explaining it even more won’t help them.

Transformation Application: Try to find a situation this week where you can focus on your blindspots. If you do not have the talent of connectedness, find someone in your life who does and tell them you appreciate them.

      • Stay away from roles with a lot of structure
      • You will do well with roles that allow a lot of changes/short-term assignments

Transformation Application: If you are high in adaptability - pick a blindspot to work on. If you don't have adaptability - find someone who you think is and tell them you appreciate them.

  • Developing Your Strengths

Transformation Tip: “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” - Maya Angelou

You will see exponential results if you already have talent in a specific area and try to develop it, rather than try to develop a talent in an area you struggle with.

“What if we study what is right with people rather than what is wrong with people?"

Your biggest weaknesses hide in the shadows of your strengths

  • Reflection To Find Direction

Transformation Tip:  "Our connection should lead us to greater connection and direction." --Steve Chua

This episode highlights how to use reflection as a tool for personal growth and direction. Steve and Pete stress the importance of reflecting on the past year to identify patterns, learn from experiences, and let go of things to make room for new opportunities.

Reflection should not be a static process but rather lead to greater connection and direction.

Transformation Application: Take intentional time for personal reflection and growth during the holiday season.

  • Self-Assessment Tool: The Wheel of Life

Transformation Tip: “Self-care is giving the world the best of you instead of what is left of you” - Katie Reed

Wheel of life - make 8 segments of a circle. Assess how you are doing in each area on a scale of 1-10:

    • Career
    • Health
    • Money/Finance
    • Family/Friends
    • Significant Other/Romance
    • Fun and recreation
    • Serving the community
    • Personal growth and development
    • Physical environment
    • Insert your own category here

Connect the lines - is it balanced?

Date it - pull it back out at a later date to measure growth

    Transformation Application
: Pick one or two of the categories to address. Then list one or two action items to help improve those categories. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

  • Finding True Purpose!

Purpose, destiny, and passion are not the same thing. In this episode, Steve and Pete discuss and differentiate these concepts to bring clarity to finding your true purpose.

Transformation Application:  "Purpose is not just what we do, but what happens in others when we do what we do." - Dr. Caroline Leaf

There is often a misconception that purpose is a single event

True purpose is found in understanding one's own value and making a meaningful impact on others

Success is not the same as significance

We must accept and embrace our imperfections. This allows us to truly focus on serving others and leads to fulfillment and significance

Transformation Application: Reflect and write down three times that you have felt a sense of joy while adding value to a situation or community. Consider what you would sacrifice time, energy, or resources to do again.

  • Gaining Clarity

Transformation Tip: “The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing”

A lack of clarity can lead to overthinking. Overthinking can lead to overwhelm and ultimately getting stuck.

    Practical tips for finding clarity:

    • It is already in you
    • Process of removal
      • “Burning off the fog”
    • Talk things out or journal (processing)

    Clarity is NOT:

    • Understanding the big picture in life
    • Going to explain everything in your life
    • Carved in stone and can never change

Transformation Application: Ask yourself if you are overthinking things. If you are, find someone to talk through it with you.
