When you look at the definition of the word first it means “coming before all others in time or order; foremost in position, rank, or importance.” You can always tell what is important to a person by looking at their priorities. Some people wake up first thing in the morning to workout because their health has become something that they esteem above all other obligations. We often feel the benefits of being first when beginning a new relationship. You find this new exciting person at the top of your list even if that means canceling prior obligations. We’ve all been there. There is a remarkable blessing that comes when we place God as the FIRST in our lives. Do you give him the first of your time or does He get a short yawning prayer right before you fall asleep after a long workday? Do you give Him the first fruits of your income of do you give to Him only after you’ve paid all your bills? Remember, your priorities tell a lot about what you esteem to be vital in your life. The dictionary defines the word “benefit” as an advantage or profit gained from something. There’s an unlimited amount of benefits that come from serving God. The scripture tells us in James 1:17 that “EVERY desirable and beneficial gift comes out of heaven. The gifts are rivers of light cascading down from the Father of Light. If you were asked “What was the last meal that you ate?”, what would you say? A nice juicy steak with mashed potatoes and green beans? A slice of New York style cheese pizza? Or perhaps simply a bowl of cereal? No matter your answer, we know that it is imperative to eat each day. Studies show that a human can survive between 45-61 days without food, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone reading this would do so voluntarily. With an onslaught of food shows, cooking competitions and fast food commercials there is no doubt that the consumption of food can go from necessity to leisure; so why don’t people have that same mindset when it comes to spiritual food? Many people can go weeks without ever reading God’s Word to build up their spirit, yet we succumb to the emotion called “hangry” (hunger + angry) if we miss one meal. Many of our natural bodies are overweight or obese yet our spirit man looks like the Pink Panther. Why? Your life will can’t go to another level, you will won’t experience the excitement that comes from starting a new and better chapter and you forfeit seeing God’s true design for your life unless you get tired of being who you are right now and make the changes.
