With the growth of social media, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tik Tok et al have a tremendous data bank on friends, enemies, conversations and habits of almost every single person on the planet. Not only is this a a form of surveillance, it's a tremendous tool to be used and misused by dubious entities working for the Government. In light of the powers granted in the frenzy of the invasion of rights of privacy post 9/11, many agencies have willingly misused their powers to ensnare and entrap unsuspecting citizens in compromising situations.

Trevor Aaronson runs a podcast and blog where he details many of these cases, sometimes amounting to millions of dollars, which often either have no result or a failed case due to clumsy evidence gathering, innocence of the subject or entrapment. Sometimes it's just down to the agencies wanting a jolly on the taxpayer.
