Almost three decades ago, 33-year-old Brian Jason Stock was found severely injured inside his own home in Hull, East Yorkshire. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died later that day. While three people were immediately arrested, nobody has ever been charged with Jason's murder.

His case is one of those that is not widely reported and sadly seems to be somewhat forgotten by many....

On March 19, 2009, 35-year-old Claudia Lawrence stepped out from her home in York, England and simply vanished. Since then, no evidence has been found suggesting she is either dead, or alive, but it is widely believed Claudia met her killer while walking to work, that early Thursday morning.

One Saturday evening in 1997, 14-year-old, Kate Bushell, went out for her usual walk with a neighbour's dog in Exeter, Devon. But when she did not return, her parents started to grow worried. When the guitarist of a Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers—27-year-old Richey Edwards—vanished in early 1995, it was widely presumed he had taken his own life. Ian David Karslake Watkins was born on the 30th of July 1977 to loving parents. He was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil which is a small borough that lies to the north of Cardiff in Wales. Ian was a content and happy child who loved the outdoors and his family. He was intelligent and sociable and made friends easily. 

As Ian reached his middle school years he developed a passion for music. No matter the instrument Ian would figure out how to play it. His bright and inquisitive mind meant he enjoyed the thrill of learning something new and it didn’t take long for his family to realise he had a real talent for entertainment through his musical passions.

When Ian started attending Hawthorn High School and became more independent with his music tastes he was drawn to rock and metal music and began to listen to artists like  Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Megadeth. It was during this time that Ian met Mike Lewis who would become a lifelong friend. The two had a mutual passion for both listening to and playing metal music. In 1991 the pair decided to form their own rock band which they called Aftermath. The genre of music they played together was known as thrash metal and the pair would spend every spare moment in Ian’s back garden writing or playing their own music. Whilst his parents didn’t understand the genre they encouraged his musical talents and supported his passions. 

In 2009 he decided to branch out on his own in a side venture. He started a project he called "L'Amour La Morgue". "L'Amour La Morgue" was much more about music production than musical performance. The 17 tracks he released under this moniker were comprised of remixes of popular songs from a broad range of genres such as Beyonce, the Killers, Tears for Fears, Bring me the Horizon and Young Guns.

In 2010 the Lostprophets released yet another album, this time titled The Betrayed. Given their huge success, they were now attracting requests for collaborations from some of music’s biggest names. Yet again the album was hugely successful and the band set off on another worldwide tour. Just two years later, in 2012 they released their fifth album called Weapons.

It was whilst they were touring to promote The Betrayed album that the image Ian had been presenting to the world began to fracture...

With the funeral behind them and the trial not yet underway, Denise and Ralph began to cope with James’s loss in different ways. While Denise went inside herself and closed off to the world, Ralph sought comfort at the bottom of a bottle. They spent less and less time together. What had held them together was James; without him, they were islands - completely consumed by their grief and unable to find a way back to each other. And yet, one month after James’s murder and just days after what would have been his third birthday, a light appeared amidst the darkness. Denise found out she was pregnant.

Denise recalls that finding out she was pregnant literally saved her life. Without the burgeoning life growing within her she had no hope, no direction and nothing to live for. That is not to say her pregnancy was plain sailing or filled with joy. Remember this is a mother who had lost one child to stillbirth and another to murder. When she gave birth to this child, all going well, she would be a mother of three with only one child in her arms. Imagine the conflict of feeling both joy at the kick of your unborn child and guilt for experiencing happiness when your other child has been taken from you so brutally.

Guilt had become a constant companion to Denise. Just one moment she had taken her eyes off James and her hand out of his. Just moments stood between him walking out of the butchery and her racing outside to find him.

The deep mental and emotional fears about losing another child would be more than most of us could handle. But for Denise and Ralph, they also had the upcoming trial to contend with.
