D.B. Cooper is a name popularly used to refer to an unidentified man who hijacked  a Boeing 727 aircraft in the northwest United States, in the airspace between Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington, on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 24, 1971. He extorted $200,000, in ransom (equivalent to $1,234,000 in 2018) and parachuted to an uncertain fate. Despite an extensive manhunt and protracted FBI investigation, the perpetrator has never been located or identified. It remains the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history, and we hope it stays that way….”LET D.B. BE!”

Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, was an American journalist who was widely known for her record-breaking trip around the world in 72 days, and an experiment in which she worked undercover to report on a mental institution from within. (Thats the one that got our attention). She was a pioneer in her field, and launched a new kind of investigative journalism.  Bly was also a writer, industrialist, inventor, and a charity worker. When Bly was first approached with this opportunity she wasn’t quite sure if she had what it took to pass as mentally ill, but she later found is wasn’t so hard to submerse herself in the world of insanity, and what she found changed the world of psychiatric care forever.

The Axeman of New Orleans was an American serial killer active in New Orleans, Louisiana from May 1918 to October 1919. Though there were similar murders as early as 1911. The perpetrator was never identified, and the murders remain unsolved. Was the Axeman one person? And if so, Why did he do it? Was it a for the thrill, compulsion, sexual pleasure, or maybe, just maybe….it was to promote Jazz. We kept all options on the table.  -_-

In 1972, Kuno Hofmann was a deaf mute German labourer, a cripple who had spent nine years in mental institutions.  According to the public prosecutors, he was perfectly sane and fully accountable for his actions.  But his actions were…strange, by any normal standards. What sort of actions, you might ask? Oh just forced entry into graveyards and mortuaries near his home in Nurenberg, looking for freshly dead bodies. He chose his victims from death notices in the newspapers, and methodically made his way to a new corpse, stabbing into it with razor blades or a knife.  Sometimes, he cut the head off, sometimes he drank the blood.  From his prison cell, Hofmann explained, that he did it to make himself "good looking and strong”. Spoiler….it didn’t work.

James Butler Hickok, better known as "Wild Bill" Hickok, was a folk hero of the old west known for his work across the frontier as a wagon master, soldier, spy, scout, lawman, gunfighter, gambler, showman, and actor. He earned a great deal of notoriety, hugely in part, by the tales that he told about his own life. Some believe his exploits to be fictitious, but they remain the basis of much of his fame and reputation. Whether you believe the hype or not, Hickok has one hell of a story, and will always be considered an American legend. He fought a bear, ya know? Just sayin'.

"Without weapons, nor violence, nor hatred"… those were the words scrawled across the vault wall at the Societe Generale in Nice, France. But how did they get there? And more importantly, how did anyone manage to enter the vault? With a door of steel three feet thick, the extremely cautious Lloyd’s of London deemed it so secure they saw no need for an alarm. This is the story of Albert Spaggiari, the world’s smoothest bank robber, or we think so anyways…Enjoy!

You could say Nick Yarris hit a streak of bad luck in his life, between being a victim of sexual abuse, brain trauma, adolescent drug and alcohol abuse, and of course, there was that short little 22-year stint on death row for a murder he didn't commit. Ya know, if you lay it all out, it sounds like the “shit scale” may be tipped in his favor. We hope you enjoy the tragic, yet inspiring story of Nick Yarris.
