  • The importance of wearing slippers 🥿 🥿 in Russian homes 🌇🇷🇺
    Transcript:
One of the most challenging parts of adapting to life in a foreign country is learning to understand and adapt to the cultural differences between your home country and the country you are living in. Speaking of living in a Russian home or having guests to your home, домАшние тАпочки (tApochki - home slippers) are one of those essential Russian cultural norms.
You don’t have to live in Russia very long before you realize that you immediately check your dirty shoes at the doorway and look for your slippers to wear throughout the house. And if you have guests, it is always good to keep extra pairs of tapochki for them to wear when they come to your place. Walking around in socks is not acceptable especially if they are not mended:) When at one`s Russian home you are most likely to be offered a pair of slippers, or you can always bring your own pair of slippers, if you want. At home parties, some women may bring an extra pair of heels or shoes for inside use.
The reason for that is quite simple. In many Russian apartments, there are usually rugs (коврЫ - kavrY ), on the floors and the walls. Some may be quite nice but often they are not easy to vacuumclean. Besides, This tradition has been going on for centuries, and hosts usually offer tapochki (slippers) to their guests.
I think that slippers mean a lot to Russians. We have even a proverb about slippers (Кто рАньше встал - тогО и тАпки - Kto rAn`shye vstal - tavO y tApki - literally, One gets the slippers who got up earlier). Even the monument to the ordinary slippers was set up in a Russian town Tomsk in 2006. Anybody can try them on.
Oleg Kislitskiy, the sculptor, could not decide on the design of the slippers — with pompons, with open toes, or wool ones. In the end, he decided to make a copy of his own slippers that he wears at home. The bronze slippers look truly worn, making the monument more realistic. Now you understand how important the slippers are to Russians.

  • How to address people in the street in Russian
    Transcript:
Suppose you want to ask someone for directions or to attract someone's attention. What is the appropriate way to address this person? Context:
"Извини́те, а где банк?" ("Excuse me, where is the bank?") or
"Это Ваш кошелёк?" ("Is this your wallet?") .
In English it would be Mister or Miss (Mrs), in French people say Monsieur or Madame, in Spanish Sr or Sra. Is there something like this in Russian?
Such things as calling a stranger in the street, addressing somebody in a shop and attempts to draw a waiter`s attention in the cafe have been a real torture for us (Russians) for the last couple of decades.
But there are some rules that anyone can follow
if one finds himself in such a situation:
    1. A boy or girl can be addressed: ма́льчик (MAHL-cheek - boy), де́вочка (dyEvachka - girl).
    2. A person looking between about 14 (a teenager) and 35 could be addressed as:
    молодо́й челове́к
    (maw-law-DOY cheh-law-VEК -literally, a young man) or
    де́вушка (DEH-voosh-kah - a girl)
though sometimes it can be quite difficult to make any reasonable age boundaries.
    3. The problem is that there are currently no universally accepted proper addressing to older people in the modern language. Though a child before about 8 can call an adult
    дя́дя (DYAH-dyah - uncle) /
    тётя (TYAW-tyah - aunt) or
    ба́бушка (BAH-boosh-kah - grandma)/
    де́душка  (dyEdushka - grandpa).
The latter are also appropriate for younger people to address
senior people, but only if they called them
    сыно́к (sih-NOK - informally, son),
    до́чка (DOCH-kah - informally, daughter),
    внучо́к (vnoo-CHOK - informally, grandson) or
вну́чка (VNOOCH-kah - informally, granddaughter) first even though they don`t have any family connections.
4."Эй!" ("Hey!") interjection can also be used when addressing people though it can seem rude.
If a person addresses you in this way, don't expect anything good.

    Russian Grammar note 🤓👇📝
In Russian there is no distinction between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. This is a reason why you may see them also referred to as possessive modifiers.
Just like English, Russian has a set of possessive modifiers.
Possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives are used in Russian to express possession or ownership.
The Russian words for “my” in the Nominative case are 🤓👇
    «мой», «моя́», «моё», «мои́».
The word «мой» is used with masculine nouns in a singular form.
The word «моя́» is used with feminine nouns in a singular form.
The word «моё» is used with neuter nouns in a singular form.
    The plural variant is «мои́».
    Спаси́бо, что дочитáли до концá.
Thank you that you got to the end. 🤗✨
