Welcome to our re-release of District Disconnet and Parents' Bill of Rights.
Jen and Kim discuss teaching the words 'aphrodisiac" and 'impotent' to high school students. Jen tells about an unfortunate F BOMB dropped on a recording she accidentally submitted on a test. It wouldn't be a Twisted Teacher episode without an update about Ben Affleck. Kim finds herself in a tiny tirade about why kids are watching Euphoria while their parents are banning books. They also discuss the disconnect between school districts and the teachers. Is it really ok to have parents pop in your classroom whenever they want to check on their kids? Is it ok for parents to require a list of books a teacher may have in his/her classroom? Is it ok for the district to let parents run our education system?

We had the honor of interviewing Peter DeWitt. Peter is an educational consultant and author who has dedicated his career to promoting effective leadership and instruction in the classroom. With over 20 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and district-level administrator, Peter offers a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing today's education system.
In this episode, we discuss the concepts of his new book: De-implementation: Creating the Space to Focus on What Works. What can we really take off our plates to continue to be effective educators?

Here is one of our pivotal episodes where Jen has only four days of teaching left.
Jen and Kim revisit all the elements of education that can only be described as Pervasive Grossness. It's a recipe calling for a cup of imposter syndrome, a gallon of toxic positivity, a large sprinkling of unrealistic mandates, and 100 tablespoons of a continued lack of support.

In this episode, Kim talks about her hatred of traffic circles, and Jen attempts to debunk the efficacy of deer whistles.
They discuss all the types of parents teachers deal with. Helicopter parents incessantly hover. Lawnmower parents clear the way for their children so that they never need to problem-solve. Kim created the Wack a Mole parent who pops up out of nowhere and then disappears only to pop up again months later to wreak havoc. Why do parents do this and how can we work with them before we lose our sanity?

Kim and Jen thought it would be timely to re-release this episode since many Florida teachers are packing up their classrooms to avoid being convicted of a felony for having an unvetted book in their classrooms.
Trigger warning: We discuss sensitive themes including sex and violence that we find in classic literature. We understand that some content is unsuitable for certain ages. However, if one is censoring books, one should be aware of the content in much of the literature that has been on the approved lists for decades. We aren't saying the classics should be banned, but we are proving a point that one must be well-read and well-versed in literature in a holistic manner before one bans books based on excerpts taken out of context. Why can't we choose excerpts from books that don't include questionable content but support our literary instruction?

We were fortunate enough to speak with Corey Scott. Corey was a special education teacher that arrived at teaching without an education degree or training. He has taken what he wished he had known and has created a course and coaching program that prepares new, inexperienced Special Education Teachers for their first day in the classroom. Listen to learn the things that should be non-negotiables to prepare a brand new teacher with no training. You can find Corey on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/corey-scott-760735165/
