Is this the best predator film since the 1987 original? Back to basics – effectively warrior against warrior, or hunter and against hunted. We loved the historical setting and the authentic Comanche cultural references.

We look at the marketing campaign which might appear quite modest given the film was released straight to streaming.

Director: Jaume Collet-Serra (known for directing the horror films House of Wax (2005), Orphan (2009) Unknown (2011) )

    Writer: Anthony Jaswinski

    Music: Marco Beltrami

Stars: Blake Lively and Stephen “Sully” Seagull

Taglines: What was once in the deep is now in the shallows.

Not a Jaws rip off brought up to date with a CGI shark replacing the beloved rubber version from 1975. This is a completely different kind of shark movie. Exciting, tense and edge of seat scary with some incredible cinematography and landscapes.

We examine the marketing campaign from the tense trailers, gorgeous colourful posters and clever TV spots. We also look at the tongue in cheek social media campaign which also introduced us to one of the stars of the film. Stephen “Sully” Seagull. Unlike the shark, sully wasn’t CGI. He was real and put in a fine performance.

    Sea of Love (1989)

    Director: Harold Becker

    Writer: Richard Price

Stars: Al Pacino, Ellen Barkin, John Goodman, Michael Rooker, Richard Jenkins, Samuel Jackson and New York City.

Taglines: “In search of a killer, he finds someone who’s either the love of his life or the end of it.”

A superb film-noir police procedural with brilliant comedy chemistry between Pacino and Goodman and erotic chemistry between Pacino and Barkin. The city of New York is almost a character as it serves as a backdrop to the lonely lives of the stars. Sea of Love paved the way for the Femme Fatale films of the 1990s such as Basic Instinct.

We look at the brilliant posters and consider how the film benefited from the return of Pacino after a 4 -year absence. We also consider whether the name of the film should have been different. Would adopting the literal translation of the French title have worked better?

    THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980)

    Directed by: Irvin Kershner

Writing Credits: Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan. Story by George Lucas

Cast: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Taglines: The Adventure Continues... The Star Wars saga continues... The battle continues...

Before Empire, sequel films tended to be inferior re-treads of the original with the same plot and cast. Empire redefined the sequel and started the trend towards “universe” films. It’s also regarded as one, if not the best, sequels of all time. We have a look at the marketing for the film including the torrent of toys and merchandise and a very clever article in Starburst Magazine which revealed the plot, and no-one seemed to notice!

Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Diana Rigg (Last role), Matt Smith

“A murder in the past. A mystery in the future!”

The marketing promises a 1960s nostalgia fest with bright colours and a pumping soundtrack. It is in fact a murder mystery with a touch of time-travel. And that’s perhaps the problem. The marketing didn’t tell customers what the film was about, and many stayed at home as a result. The film failed at the box office despite the rave reviews. We have a close look at why the marketing might be to blame.
