  • Typical Books EP205 - Horror Book Review • For Rye by Gavin Gardiner

I really enjoyed For Rye and it is my first read from Gavin Gardiner. If you like horror with dilapidated houses, writers going off the deep end, and a little town with big secrets, this is a good pick...

"Renata Wakefield, a traumatised novelist on the brink of suicide, is drawn back to her childhood hometown following her mother's ritualistic murder. Before long, she becomes ensnared in the mysteries of Millbury Peak as one question lies heavy: Who killed Sylvia Wakefield?”

Special thank you to Gavin for the review copy!

  • Typical Books EP204 - Book Review • Novellas • The Walking Son and Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke

I read two interesting horror novellas recently, and they were very different! The Walking Son by Eddie Generous from The Seventh Terrace and Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric LaRocca from Weirdpunk Books.

The Walking Son is a many-threaded plot that delves into the supernatural, body transformation, and treachery - a lot for a slim volume, but so well crafted. I had a good time reading this, and thank you to Eddie Generous for sending it along.

Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke is the talk of the town, and deals with online control, deception, and depraved desires. I recommend some reading with this one on contracts in relationships which is one element I've seen little conversation about so far.

Reading wrap ups here include my to-be-read or TBR, my haul, and everything bookish for the month. So, I am late getting this out, but I did record it earlier so it is accurate, though I have finished reading two novellas and The Killer Across the Table as of uploading.

Loads of books but the highlight is the flip-book of Blucifer from the HWA StokerCon Anthology!

  • Typical Books EP201 - Book Review • Stillborn Gallery by Axl Barnes • Extreme Horror Novella

This recent purchase lead me to a new author, and I want to read more. Axl Barnes contacted me about his latest collection, Stillborn Gallery and I was very interested so bought it right away. For those who like apathy crossing into their nihilism, as I do, with visceral scenes of gore that highlight the insignificance of life or what many regard as values intrinsic to the human-animal, these short stories find darkness in every corner; and tear even that to shreds. Each is a study on mortality and I found this a great counter to the feel-good beach-reads of horror.

  • Typical Books EP199 - Scanlines by Todd Keisling • Haunted VHS Horror Book Review

Scanlines by Todd Keisling is a very dark novella from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Terrifying, especially to those who have tumbled down the wrong rabbit holes online, late at night, or when you were too young.  "We were ghouls in a graveyard, digging up a dead man's grave for closure. We never considered he might want to stay buried."

From the back cover: "...No one has ever seen the supposed Duncan Tape, presumably because it doesn't exist. It's a ghost story perpetuated on the forums and chat rooms of the internet, another handful of bytes scattered across the Information Superhighway at blistering 56K modem speeds.  For Robby and his friends, an urban legend is the last thing on their minds when a boring Friday night presents a chance to download porn. But the short clip they watch turns out to be something far more graphic and disturbing, and in the coming days, they'll learn even the most outlandish urban legends possess a shred of truth..."
