UConn fell to Tennessee 80-76 in Knoxville, marking the Lady Vols’ first win over the Huskies since 2007 and the first signature victory of the Kim Caldwell era. Despite holding a late 76-74 lead, UConn couldn’t execute down the stretch, plagued by poor rebounding, stagnant offense, and missed opportunities. Tennessee dominated the boards 46-34, including 17 offensive rebounds that led to crucial second-chance points, while UConn struggled from three (5-for-20) and lacked consistency outside of Paige Bueckers and KK Arnold. Paige settled for midrange shots instead of attacking from deep, Azzi Fudd played timidly, and Ashlynn Shade missed key open looks. Tennessee’s physicality, hustle, and timely contributions from players like Jewel Spear and Samara Spencer outpaced UConn’s late-game efforts. Despite forcing 19 turnovers and excelling in fast-break points, UConn’s inability to secure key rebounds and execute offensively raised serious questions about their readiness to compete for a national title.
