We worked together some years ago.  I find today’s Believe guest, Scotti Taylor, to be a woman of substance, of wicked determination and unapologetic in being herself.  I like that in a person.  She’s been on the show before in, I Will not be Silent, episode 33, and Takeaways and Looks Ahead, episode 40.  Our conversation covers how outgoing people can actually be introverted and the legacy of a loving grandmother for starters.

I knew I would enjoy connecting with Scotti again.  Her answers to the Believe questions happen to be things I whole heartedly agree with.  (Even if I didn’t, that’s ok too.) If God knows who we are, either by design or allowance, surely he loves us no matter what.  As Scotti pointed out, he does not deny love.  When you love someone different from you that’s when you figure out what deep, abiding love is.  And isn’t that what all want?  To be seen and valued for who we are?  Yes please.  Let’s do more of that.

Alvin Coda and I met a couple of years ago when my primary doctor recommended him for the annual skin check.  So, yes, he’s a dermatologist.  What struck me about him from minute-one was his warmth, humor and ease.  We even talked about the podcast at that initial appointment and he genuinely seemed interested.  He momentarily left the room, came back in and said he had subscribed.  How’s that for bedside manner?  Fast forward, I’ve been back for appointments, and that initial impression was exactly the same, maybe even more so.   Out of his earshot, I commented to his assistant, you must enjoy working with him.  And she said, yes, it’s going on five years and I really do.  

I went into this conversation with Alvin suspecting I’d be thrilled with the outcome and I am.  I relish his 30,000 foot outlook on life in being a good person, doing good things while he is multi-tasking making his wife one of her favorite dinners.  And while I may not agree with his choice of Stepbrothers for a favorite movie, I appreciate his rationale for finding depth and beauty in it.  I think that’s who he is - passionate, caring and ready to persevere.

For the show today, we have Taylor Conde-Nau, a guest in our Believe series.  Yes, she’s a relation.  A daughter.  If you’ve been a long-time listener you’ve heard her before in A Crash Course in Adulthood episode 5, and I Did it My Way, episode 54.  She has some things to say about pretty privilege which was not a phrase I had heard before.  Oh sure, I’ve seen certain people have advantages based on attributes they had little or nothing to do with, but hadn’t heard it from the unique perspective of this 21 year-old.

I admire how this young lady is adulting into a cherished version of herself as she expands into who she is.  We need to really understand ourselves before we can embrace who we are.  Like her love of horror as a genre and my aversion to it.   “It’s all good” as I like to say.  Taylor gets to be her own healthy, happy person as do you.  And me.

Today’s Believe conversation is with Lindsey Heinrich.  We got reacquainted recently and because of our subsequent, fulfilling get-to-know-you conversation I invited her on the show.  I am deeply moved by people who show up confident in themselves and create a safe space for you to do the same.  Lindsey is such a person.  We talk about embracing the imperfect of each person including yourself then offering grace.

I am eager for the collaboration between Lindsey and Betty.  The book, The Space Between, sounds very inspirational as it reveals the stories of others in all their beauty and pain.  The addition of Lindsey’s art will no doubt be impactful as we ‘feel all the feels’ of the people who dared to share a piece of themselves with us.  I know I learn about myself, and this life, by hearing the experiences of others.

Molly and I got connected through Audry, a podcast platform. We met up and decided to do an episode swap at her invitation. I do marvel at how we can connect with others. In this conversation Molly shares some wild experiences she’s had with animals and the belief she has in actualizing the potency of who we are.

I appreciate Molly’s curiosity and desire to dive into the things she finds interesting and that have propelled her into how she is living her life. It brought her to the work she is doing and no doubt, she’s been able to come alongside others to maximize their content and to feel good about who they are. Sounds familiar right?

She has a strong faith and is not afraid to share it. The emphasis being on love, Rae O’Rourke has been navigating a difficult health diagnosis. She has sought, and learned, quite a bit a long the way. So much so that now she would like to share with others who might need tools and encouragement that have helped her.

I enjoyed reconnecting with Rae. I would say she is the picture of health: radiant, joyful, grateful. Her purpose has become clearer as she merges it with her passion, remembering to have grace for others including herself. And Rae knows hope can get you a long way. Just ask her. She is living proof.

Ok, so today we had some major technical difficulties as the recording between Enitan, who is in a rural village in Nigeria with limited internet access, and me in California. You will note some delays. We did our best to navigate them and press on. I found his persistence in getting back on the call close to a dozen times evidence of all he shared during our conversation. Consistency. Putting in your best.

Having been on the show before in Capturing Life through a Lens, episode 76, Enitan and I have become friends. I will say that is one of the great things about social media. Meeting new people and making a real connection. He asked if he could come back on the show and of course I said yes. Since we are in the Believe series I got to find out what he believes and how that shows up in his life. Inspiring? Yes.

In short we celebrated so much it looked like we could divide the episode into two. So we did, with Shaun returning as co-host. What I am loving about the Believe series is there is no topic under which these questions should be answered. We are celebrating our 100th episode today.  It’s been a wonderful, challenging, fulfilling ride.  And one we want to keep going.  I asked Shaun to sit in with me.  We’ve invited a couple of past guests Amanda and Priscilla to join us - you will find them on the next episode.  We’re switching up the usual get-to-know-you section and adding the believe questions to round it out.  It adds up to a memorable time.

I am a fan of today’s guest, Colby Martin. He and his wife, Kate, are co-pastors of a church I attended. What makes me a fan is the humility in which he conducts himself. Plus he makes God beautiful which is the best thing I can say about anyone. In our conversation we talk about the woman who inspires him to burst out of his progressive bubble, whether he actually has an embarrassing tattoo, and why Lord of the Rings is his favorite movie.

Most of us believe we each get one life and what we do with it is the gift of being here. While Colby is in the process to “improve” he has the opportunity to lead a group of people toward full stop love and acceptance. Isn’t it a far better choice to err on the side of treating other people, everyone in fact, the way we want to be treated?
