  • UV Funk 029: Best Of 2014 Special
    One more year, lots of new favourites. Once again UV Funk host Philipp asked a lot of Dresden-based and mostly UV-related DJs and artists to comment on their biggest tune of the year. As in recent years the show gathers a fine collection of songs from Afro via House through to Ambient. This year it seems as some guys are pretty much into adding affects.

    Rafal Grobel is a long time supporter of UV and got a close friend of us. We first met him when touring through Poland, payed him twice a visit in Warsaw for some gigs and invited him once to Dresden too. Albrecht asked him questions to find out more about the music scene in Poland. Q: Rafal, you’ve always been such a busy man with music and intercultural projects. I know you are deeply connected to every known spot in the electronic (music) scene in Poland for example throwing parties, holding interdisciplinary events, RBMA, Boiler Room, S1 Warsaw label – just to name a few. Tell us how you got into all this and is there a consistent thread in all your work? As a 90s kid in Poland I grew up on a mixure of hip-hop movement massively flooding the country on one side and druggy clubbing scene on the other. Living in a small town two hours from Warsaw, years before Internet, left me only TV and older friends to get into music.     Interview held by Philipp Demankowski We met in Gießen for the first time when Conrad and me were playing there in 2013. You have been throwing parties back then. What comes to your mind when you are thinking about those times? Throwing parties is a great thing. You are able to curate a musical journey for your guests and in a small town like Giessen you are able to fill a gap in the musical landscape. For us this was a memorable experience. In those times we got much deeper into the whole world of electronic music. I really loved it. Conrad and I enjoyed your live set you played that very evening and now you’re going to release on Uncanny Valley. Things went rather quickly. How do you feel about it? I’m super happy that this worked out. I have been following Uncanny Valley for a while now and I appreciate that the label isn’t only realising a great variety of sound but is also taking care of its artists as a true collective.     Hey Vincent, thanks for your podcast. What’s the story behind it and where did you record it? I recorded it at home actually, just last night. My studio is next to our upstairs bathroom, so while my wife was taking a bath I was entertaining her with some music. The pic attached is a family of people I drew on her toes when she was sleeping, so the long bath was to wash of the faces of her toes and I owed her one so played a quite mellow and easy going (for me..) set for her. How long have you been deejaying and how has it evolved over the time? I started playing records when I was 15, so thats about… uhh…. Well…. Uuhh… over 20 years.. I started in the age when New Beat was just coming up and acid house was beginning to boom, 1987. I played in a youth centre that had a discotheque that was fuly equiped with gear, but there was never anyone playing records.
