We are now in Mark 15:25-32, Mark recording the events surrounding the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross.

An inscription written on a board nailed atop the cross proclaimed Jesus, “The King of the Jews.”

The crucifixion began at 9 o’clock in the morning. Here Jesus was crucified between two thieves, one on the left and the other on the right. Jesus thus fulfilled Isaiah 53:12, “He was numbered with the transgressors.”

Dr. Mitchell points out the Savior’s obedience to the Father. He took on Himself all the sins of the whole world from the beginning of time till the end of time. He has even taken upon Himself your sin and mine for all time and eternity.

This lesson begins in Mark 15:1.

Dr. Mitchell reviews the first 14 verses.

Here Jesus is before the civil court of Pilate who asked the Jewish leaders, What evil has He done?

Then we continue in verse 15. Here Pilate wanted to please the crowd so he released a murder, Barabbas, and delivered Jesus to be crucified.

What follows is the scene when the soldiers mocked Jesus and beat Him with a reed and unnecessarily slapped His face repeatedly.

Dr. Mitchell brings out several O.T. scriptures fulfilled by our Lord’s crucifixion, Ps.22 and Isa.53 and Psalm 69.

While on the way to Golgotha, the soldier commandeered a man to help carry Jesus’ cross, Simon of Cyrene.

Our Lord, on the cross, refused to drink the wine mixed with myrrh, a drug used to deaden the pain.

Our study begins in Mark 14:65 and since Dr. Mitchell already spoke on Peter’s 6 steps downward to denial in this section, Dr. Mitchell will proceed on to Mark 15:1.

Dr. Mitchell shares the distinction between these two trials. The first was before an ecclesiastical court of the Jews. This next court is a civil court before Pontius Pilate.

The first trial had to do with Jesus’ person when He was asked if He was the Messiah the son of the Blessed One. Our Lord acknowledged, He Is.

This next trial is a civil trial court and has to do with Jesus’ character. Remember how Pilate said to the Jews, “What evil has He done?” in verse 14.

What do you say about Jesus Christ?

Let’s turn to Mark 14:65 to begin.

In this lesson, Mark 14:53-64, Mark records Jesus before the council. Here the Lord is subject to a fake trial.

This is a most solemn occasion in our Lord’s life.

The Sanhedrin, you will notice, had already decided the verdict they wanted against Jesus. They tried to find any witnesses who would testify against Christ. It says, there were many false witnesses. Then two false witnesses said they heard Jesus say that He would destroy the temple and in three days build another. To see how far off these words were from the truth, read John 2:19.

The Lord Jesus remained silent up until the high priest asked him directly if He was the Messiah. Jesus said, “I AM”.

Turn with us to Mark 14:53. Dr. Mitchell tells us about Jesus’ trial.

We now enter into a passage that shows the Savior in prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. The Lord expressed His deep sorrow of soul at the prospect of dying on the cross.

Dr. Mitchell quotes Hebrews 5:7 where it is witnessed that Jesus prayed with loud cries and tears to His Father to ask for deliverance from out of death and He was heard.

Here in the garden our Lord said the Scriptures, concerning Him, must be fulfilled.

To fulfill what Jesus quoted in verse 27, they all left Him and fled.

Here also, Dr. Mitchell gives the 6 steps downward of Peter up to the point of his denial of the Lord.

Let’s open our Bible to Mark 14:32.

Dr. Mitchell shows us our Savior in the Garden of Gethsemane in prayer.

Now in Mark 14:26-41 Mark gives us Jesus and His disciples in the garden of Gethsemane below the Mount of Olives.

Here our Lord gives to His disciples the Scripture from Zechariah 13:7 that the shepherd will be struck and the sheep would be scattered. But He gives them this hope, that after He is raised He would go before them to Galilee.

Here Peter voices his allegiance to the Lord Jesus in all earnestness. And Jesus tells Peter of his coming denial.

According to Luke 22:31-32 Jesus prayed for Peter’s faith that it would not fail. Peter would fail, but his faith did not.

Our Lord prays submitting Himself to the will of His Father.

Now we continue with Jesus and His disciples in the upper room during this last passover of our Lord Jesus Christ before He was crucified.

Our Bible is open to Mark 14:22-25.

In these verses Mark writes Jesus’ words concerning the meaning of the bread and cup of which they were about to partake.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that it is not our value we place on the blood of Christ, but the value that God places on the blood of Christ.

The Lord’s supper is a remembrance of a person, the person of the Lord Jesus Christ God in the flesh, the God-Man who died for our sins and rose again on our behalf.

Here in Mark 14:22 is Dr. Mitchell with our sole ground for our redemption in the Lord Jesus Christ on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

With you Bible open to Mark 14:10 through 21.

In these verses, we see Mark’s focus on one Judas Iscariot for two verses. Here he describes the arrangements being made by Judas with the chief priests to betray the Lord Jesus. As a note: The other disciples referred to Jesus as Lord. Only Judas referred to Jesus as teacher as read in Matthew 26:21-25.

Dr. Mitchell takes up the passover and it’s meaning. It was an annual feast to be observed from generation to generation as a remembrance of an event.

Dr. Mitchell then states that Jesus Christ is our passover. The Jewish passover was to remember an event.

The Lord’s supper, or communion is the remembrance of Christ’s person.

Dr. Mitchell, Mark 14:10 presents our omniscient Lord Jesus Christ, our passover.

Open your Bible to Mark 14:3. Our study will take us through verse 9.

In these verses, we see Jesus dining in the house of a man named Simon. While there, an unnamed woman came to Jesus and anointed our Lord with some very expensive perfume.

Now there was a reaction to this. Some of those present grumbled that that pure and expensive perfume could have been sold and given to the poor. They neglected to observe the devotion of heart and priority of worship to the Savior Himself. Isn’t Jesus to have first place in everything?

Our Lord defends her and her expensive sacrificial devotion.

Even if you are unknown, God knows your heart, devotion and sacrifice to the Savior Himself. God is not unjust so as to forget.

Here is Dr. Mitchell, Mark 14:3-9 on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

This study begins in Mark 14 verse 1.

Dr. Mitchell gives a short overview of the chapter before going into the first three verses.

Right away we read of the plot of the rulers of the people against Jesus, to put Him to death. But they did not want to do this during the feast which might cause an uproar among the people who were there.

Dr. Mitchell points out that Jesus set the time of His death and the manner of His death. He was in control of His fulfilling what was written of Him in the Scriptures.

We then hear a short overview of the next verses about Jesus in Bethany.
