Luke now begins writing about a priest and his wife, Zachariah and Elizabeth, who were both righteous in the sight of God, Luke 1:5-14.

It is what God sees that is most important. When you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work at the cross and resurrection, God sees you as righteous in His sight. This is good news.

Luke then, gives us the time frame, the names of the people, and their situation before God and before people. They had no children and they were both old and had been praying for a child.

When the angel Gabriel came to Zachariah, the priest, he gives him the answer to their prayer. They would have a boy. His name would be called John. His birth would bring joy to them and to many.

Let’s join Dr. Mitchell in Luke 1:5 on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

As I read through these first four verses of Luke, I hear Luke addressing the “most excellent Theophilus”. His is a Greek name and he must have been in a position of authority or at least a man of some publicly recognized stature. Theophilus, who according to the text, had been verbally taught about the life of Christ.

Now, Luke is writing to him to give him a written account of what he had previously heard and been taught. They can now refer back to its truth and accuracy and not forget it.

Even though others had previously written, Luke deemed it appropriate to write an orderly account of the life of Jesus on earth although he himself was not personally present with Christ in those days.

Dr. Mitchell begins our study in the Gospel of Luke 1:1-4.

Welcome to the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast as we commence a journey through the Gospel of Luke with our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell who is finishing up his overview of this gospel.

His aim is for us to fall in love with the savior, Jesus Christ. Our Lord is presented in this gospel as the lovely one who is precious and chosen in the sight of God His Father.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that from all the Gospels we see Jesus raising 3 people from the dead. Two of the three are found here in Luke. The other is in John.

Jesus demonstrates His power over death even before His own resurrection from the dead.

Let’s join our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell, on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to finish up this overview of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

The Gospel of Luke will be the starting point of our study as Dr. Mitchell gives us an overview and exhortation from this Gospel.

First of all, he gives us a short overview of several chapters of Luke to show how the savior is a man among men.

Jesus is proclaimed as one who is a friend of tax gatherers and sinners.

Jesus read from the book of Isaiah from which He declared that He was anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed and to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.

Let’s join our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell, on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to give us an overview of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

The Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast begins a new series on the Gospel of Luke. Dr. Mitchell will be giving 3 lessons in overview comparing and contrasting the four Gospels before beginning his exposition of the Gospel of Luke.

Each writer presents the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ from his divinely revealed perspective and focus as to who this Jesus of Nazareth is.

So to begin Dr. Mitchell looks at the contrasts between Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each gospel writer was inspired of God to write without error God’s revelation to him concerning this Jesus.

Matthew writes to Jewish believers. Mark writes to Roman gentiles. Luke writes to a gentile Greek believer named Theophilus. John writes to everyone that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God.

Luke 1 Introduction.

Dr. Mitchell reviews Mark 16:15-20 in this concluding lesson in the Gospel of Mark.

Here the risen Lord presents the great commission when He told the disciples to go into the all world and preach the gospel.

Verse 16 has taken to be a scriptural proof of the necessity of baptism in order to be saved. Let it be firmly stated that only faith in the the Lord Jesus Christ alone is necessary to be saved.

Anything added to faith in Christ is not Biblical and will not save anyone.

The Lord Jesus was received up into heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father where our Lord Jesus Christ intercedes and prays for those who trust Him. (Heb 7:25)

By this ministry, He keeps believers completely saved forever.

This is the grace of God in action!

Here is Dr. Mitchell, Mark 16:15. This is the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Dr. Mitchell continues in Mark 16 verses 12-15.

Here Dr. Mitchell reviews what happened with the women at the tomb. Also, Mary Magdalene stayed behind and was looking for a dead Christ, but she was met with the Living Lord Jesus Christ.

Then the Lord appeared to two others, who went they recognized Him, reported to the others as well.

Jesus, later, appeared to 11 disciples

From 1Cor.15, the apostle Paul records and verifies appearances of the Lord Jesus to believers only after His physical resurrection from out of the dead.

There were many and varied witnesses to the risen Christ both public and private and in various locations.

Dr. Mitchell shares a personal experience he had with some headhunters in the Philippines where he had an opportunity to share with them the gospel of our risen Lord Jesus Christ.

We now enter the last chapter of the Gospel of Mark, chapter 16.

Mark writes of 3 women who were early risers and went to the tomb with spices to anoint the body of Jesus.

It then occurred to them that the stone would need to be rolled away. But when they arrived at the tomb, it had already been rolled away. Entering into the tomb, they were met with the sight of a young man, an angel, dressed in a white robe.

He tells them to not be afraid. He knew why they were there, but he told them Jesus is not here, He has risen.

The angel gave them instructions to go and tell the disciples and Peter that they would see Jesus in Galilee.

We continue in Mark 15 verses 38-47.

Here our Lord, having died, Mark records that the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom. This points to its divine origin. This veil was at least 4” thick and very heavy.

Our Lord died crying out with a loud voice, not a weak one. The roman centurion, in seeing and hearing Him, made this confession “Truly, this man was the Son of God”. How did this soldier hear that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?

Later in this passage, we see Joseph of Arimathea, asking for the body of Jesus in order to bury Jesus in his own new tomb also recorded in Matthew 27:57-60.

Our Lord’s burial fulfilled Isaiah 53:9 He “was with a rich man in His death..”

In Mark 15:38, here is Dr. Mitchell

on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

It was the 6th hour, noon by Jewish reckoning, darkness covered the whole land. Jesus is on the cross.

Mark records that at the 9th hour, that is 3pm, Jesus cried out to God asking why He had forsaken Him, quoting Psalm 22:1.

Dr. Mitchell gives us the benefit of the death of Christ found in Romans 3:24-26.

Jesus became and still is the propitiation for our sins because of His blood poured out at the cross. In so doing, God’s righteousness was vindicated and now God is free to righteously forgive sins in mercy without compromising His holiness.

Not only that, the one who believes in this Lord Jesus Christ, God can now justly declare as saved from those sins for all time and eternity.

Is this not the best news?
