Our study in the Gospel of Luke continues in chapter 5 verse 9.

Dr. Mitchell briefly overviews the previous few verses where Jesus directed the large catch of fish and called the disciples to follow Him.

In our passage before us, Luke presents Jesus healing a man who had a full case of leprosy. The man was not in doubt as to the power of Jesus to heal, but he does doubt that the Lord would heal. It was not a matter of could Jesus heal him but would Jesus heal him.

Let’s turn to Luke 5:9 with Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Having launched out into the lake from the shore, Jesus satdown to teach the people on the shoreline.

We are in Luke 5.

Jesus having finished teaching the people, told Peter to launch out into the deep waters of the Lake of Galilee.

Dr. Mitchell reveals the test of obedience in verses 1-4.

The command of Jesus guarantees a catch. He notes that the promises of God are sure to be fulfilled because He is God.

Upon Jesus’ command, Peter obeys the Lord and launches out into the deep. Here is the difference between personal experience and personal faith in God’s Word.

Prov.3:5-6," Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on thy own understanding in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths".

Let’s join Dr. Mitchell in Luke 5:4 on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

In this study, we see Luke writing another two pictures in the life of our Lord. Each picture manifests Jesus’ authority. We are in Luke 4:38 to begin.

Here Jesus is pictured as the one having power over disease.

He healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law who was ill from a high fever. Jesus healed her so much so, she immediately rose and served the Lord and his disciples.

The next picture Luke gives to Theophilus and to us is Jesus demonstrating His power over men. Luke 5:1-3.

Here our Lord is seen on a boat owned by Simon Peter and teaching from his boat out across the water to the people on the shoreline.

Let’s turn to Luke 4:38 with our teacher, Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to behold the savior as revealed in the gospel of Luke.

Luke now writes to Theophilus that Jesus left Nazareth to go down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. Jesus continues teaching in the synagogue there on the sabbath.

Luke shows there - a man there who had a spirit of an unclean demon. Luke 4:33-34.

Dr. Mitchell then points out that there is no doubt in hell nor in Heaven who Jesus is but only among the people of this

earth.

It is man who has the most difficulty in believing in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, that He is indeed the Holy One of God, who is so because He is God in the flesh.

The demon knew Jesus as a man being from Nazareth, the city where Jesus was raised from a youth.

Jesus doesn’t allow demons to proclaim who He is.

Dr. Mitchell proclaims Jesus, on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 4:31.

Jesus spoke to those in the synagogue in Nazareth, His hometown. Those who heard Him become very angry to the point of rejecting Jesus and an attempt to kill the Lord.

These attitudes and actions reveal our Lord’s word which He spoke in verse 24 of Luke 4, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in His hometown.”

What did Jesus expose to them from the Word of God that revealed their unbelief in Him?

He told them, that He Himself fulfills this prophecy from Isaiah.

He then sited two examples from the Scripture of Gentiles outside Israel who WHO DID HAVE FAITH in God’s prophets, Elijah and Elisha.

Peter writes, “We have the more sure word of prophecy to which you do well to pay attention to...” 2 Peter.1:19

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 4:18.

In this study, Luke writes of Jesus’ return to Galilee in the power of the Spirit and coming to his home town of Nazareth, Jesus both read the Word of God and spoke to the people.

Dr. Mitchell discusses Jesus’ exposition of Isa.61:1-2.

The application of this Word of God by Our Lord, through this method, later exposes the unbelief of the hometown people and on the other hand, the faith of two Gentiles who lived outside of Israel.

However, here Jesus announces that He Himself is at that very day and hour fulfilling this prophecy spoken and written by Isaiah. This prophecy revealed the ministry of the Messiah and Jesus is that Messiah.

Dr. Mitchell shares that you and I can continue the ministry of our Lord today.

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 4:14.

In Luke 4:1-13, we read and hear the words of Luke as his writes of the temptation of our Lord Jesus.

Jesus is tempted by the devil on the same 3 grounds that Eve was tempted which are the same 3 grounds on which you and I can be tempted.

Dr. Mitchell brings out how the Lord Jesus Christ repelled these temptations from the devil with the Word of God, specific Scriptures which dealt with the exact temptation at hand.

How well do you and I know the Word of God to be able to respond to temptation with God’s word?

When you read and study the Word and place it in your heart, you have a weapon the Holy Spirit can use to help you in that hour of testing.

Let’s learn more, on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, ⁠from Dr. Mitchell Luke 4:1.

In Luke 3:23-38, Luke presents the genealogy of our Lord Jesus from Mary all the way back in time to the first man, Adam, who also is called the Son of God. Adam was the son of God by creation, Jesus is the Son of God as eternal Deity.

And here in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus is the God-man, virgin born son, eternal deity and sinless humanity in one undivided person.

That Jesus was a real man, Luke gives, in writing to Theophilus, His genealogy tracing his family lineage from Mary all the way back to the beginning of time when God created the first man, Adam.

Matthew’s genealogy, on the other hand, begins with Abraham and comes forward thru time to Joseph to reveal Jesus as the virgin born son of Mary.

As a man, Jesus was to be tested.

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 3:23.

Luke continues in writing to this most excellent Theophilus by recording the baptism of Jesus by John the baptist in the Jordan river. We are in Luke 3:21-22.

Jesus was praying. While He was praying, God the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and God the Father spoke to Him. He was commending Jesus as His Son, and saying, "In you I am well pleased."

Here is a revelation of the Triune God. Here is the One true God revealed in three persons. Jesus the Son of God, the Holy Spirit of God and God the Father Himself. The tri-unity of God is revealed here in Scripture.

Jesus is God’s real man on earth being the beloved Son of the Father, the God-Man, sinless and perfect.

Let’s turn to Luke 3:21 with Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

In this lesson, we will be hearing of the ministry of John the baptist, Luke 3:1-20.

Luke is careful to fully document the time frame in which John appeared in the wilderness as found in Luke 3:1-2. In the next 3 verses, we hear his message, where he preached, and what he preached.

Luke writes that John fulfilled the specific prophecy of Isaiah 40:3-5. John gave the people warnings and exhortations.

It is most notable that John gives a personal testimony concerning the Lord Jesus in verses 16-17. Here he exalts the preeminence of the savior and His coming work of separating the true Jewish believers in Christ from out of the nation of Israel at a future time.
