The Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast continues in the

Gospel of Luke which he wrote to the most excellent

Theophilus for both him and us to know the certainty

of the words of truth concerning our Lord Jesus Christ.

We are in Lk.11: 32 as Dr. Mitchell continues the

exposition of this Gospel. In this passage he will

speak of the light which enters the eye and shines

into the whole body. We are to shine the light of the

Lord Jesus through us to others.

Next, Jesus confronts the religious leaders and

scholars of his day, e.g. the Pharisees and the lawyers

in the Scriptures. One thing that

stands out in vs.42 is that their majoring on the minors

and minoring on the majors. The priorities were

totally switched to the point of neglect of the more

important Biblical priorities.

Here is Dr. Mitchell, Lk. 11:32.

Luke 11:24-32 Jesus speaks of the futility of

self-reformation. This is different than spiritual

regeneration. Self reformation still leaves one empty, while

spiritual regeneration fills one with Christ Himself by the

Holy Spirit.

Next, Jesus says those are blessed who hear the Word of God

and do it. Blessing comes from the obedience of hearing.

He then speaks of the Sign of Jonah to this wicked generation

who were asking for a sign. Jesus went on to say that He

is the sign to this generation. Our Lord is a greater

than Jonah. Our Lord Jesus both died and was buried

and rose again and appeared to witnesses. We believe in a

the living savior, seated at the right hand of God, who also

intercedes for us.

The next picture Luke writes to Theophilus and to us has to

do, once again, with Jesus' casting out a demon which

made the man mute, unable to speak.

This brought about the occasion for some to accuse Jesus of

using the power of Beelzebul to do this. Beelzebul, or

Beelzebub is another name for Satan, the devil. It means

lord or ruler of the flies on a manure pile.

Jesus then speaks to these people to show the utter

inconsistency and irrationality of any kingdom or house

being divided against itself. If division persists,

that fall will be great! This is true even of Satan.

These accusers need to see how their thinking is not right.

Then, Dr. Mitchell goes on to speak in detail about the

unpardonable sin, what it is and what is not.

In Luke 11:5-10 we have Jesus' illustration of persistence

as it relates to prayer.

Persistence in prayer is what Dr. Mitchell says when we are

to really mean business with God in our prayer to Him.

God means business. Do you and I mean business with God

when we come to Him in prayer? It is a challenge is it not?

Yet it is here that the Lord says, keep on asking and it shall

be given to you, keep on seeking and you will find, keep on

knocking and it will be opened to you.

We next hear the encouragement that even, we, being evil

know how to give good gifts, how much more will the Father

give what is good? In this instance, it is the Holy Spirit, who

is good.

Our study resumes in Luke 11:2 with the Lord's instruction

on how to pray.

Dr. Mitchell continues with the prayer Jesus taught His

disciples. This is a model prayer which starts with a personal

relationship to God the Father. This prayer shows 3 things

with respect to God and 3 things with respect to man, which

Dr. Mitchell will bring out in detail.

He will speak of man's temporal-dependence for daily bread,

spiritual-restoration by the forgiveness of sins, and

spiritual preservation from evil and the evil one and his

power.

Dr. Mitchell gives us the next portion of Luke which he

will get into in our next lesson having to do with the

persistent friend. This lesson is a follow-up as an encouragement

to keep praying and not give up.

Broadcast, Luke 11:2.

Luke gives us the picture of Jesus in the home of Martha

in Luke 10 verses 38-42. They lived in the village of

Bethany.

Jesus is teaching and Mary is seated at His feet,

listening to His word. Luke records the comparison between

Mary and her sister Martha who was busy with making

preparations for the Lord and his disciples.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that the two sisters both

loved the Savior. The good thing that Mary had chosen

will not be taken away from her, seated at Jesus' feet,

listening to His word.

We are reminded that Luke is the Gospel of prayer.

In chapter 11 the disciples heard Jesus praying and wanted

Him to teach them how to pray. He teaches them the model

prayer.

Let's turn to Luke 10:25-37.

This picture of our Lord, dealing with a Jewish lawyer on

the question of what he could do to inherit eternal life,

is presented by Luke to us to realize that there is nothing

a person can do to inherit eternal life. Why? because

eternal life is received by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

and Him alone.

Only He has accomplished all that God demands for sin, in

all it’s entirety. Jesus dealt with sin in it’s eternal and temporal

results by dying for each person on earth, shedding His own blood. God’s righteousness was vindicated by our Lord Jesus. God is now quite free to forgive any and every kind of sin to anyone on earth, even you! and me.

Here’s Dr. Mitchell with the Good Samaritan on the

Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 10:25.

In Luke 10:16-26, we see the joy of the 72 when they had

returned from their multi-city outreach proclaiming the

coming kingdom of God in the person of the Messiah, Jesus.

Jesus gives us the ground of our joy. It is the joy of being

in right relationship with the savior, our names are

recorded in heaven. Philippians 3:20 says our citizenship is

in heaven from which we also look for the Savior, the Lord

Jesus Christ.

Next Luke gives us the joy of Jesus. He was exceedingly

joyful in the presence of His Father that God reveals

spiritual truth to those who believe. The truth Jesus speaks

to us about is the revelation from God about who Jesus is. Do

you know Jesus Christ as God has revealed Him in the Word of God?

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Once again our Lord is confronted with would-be followers,

one of whom Jesus asked to follow Him. But family affections

hindered him. Another also said he would follow Jesus but

he was not yet ready to do so on the spot. Jesus is asking

for commitment.

Then Our Lord commissions 72 other of his many disciples to

go into the harvest. Their authority was to heal the

sick and to announce that the Kingdom of God has come near,

in the person of the Lord Jesus.

They had divine authority to authenticate the message of

the coming kingdom of God. But did cities believe their

message? Those cities who rejected the gospel message of the coming kingdom with Jesus as their king would be harshly

judged in the day of judgment.

Here is Dr. Mitchell with the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, Luke 9:59.

In Luke 9:43-58, Luke takes us from Jesus’ announcement of

His coming death, to Jesus’ dealing with an argument between the disciples as to who was the greatest, to John’s

sectarian attitude concerning some who were doing things

in Jesus’ name while not being a part of their group. Then James joins his brother John to call down fire from

heaven on the Samaritans who did want Jesus there. Our Lord dealt with his disciples whom He had chosen on each of these matters.

But then someone comes to Jesus and says he would follow Jesus where ever He went.

But as Dr. Mitchell points out, the Lord did not give this man any prospect of having a comfortable lifestyle if he

was going to follow Christ.
