In this passage Luke writes of when Jesus is invited to a dinner at the Pharisee's house on the Sabbath. Would Jesus heal on the Sabbath?

Our study continues from our last lesson in which the Lord

Jesus is telling His Jewish people to enter by way of the

narrow door because He is their door, their Messiah.

God yearns for His people to come to Him having made every

provision for the forgiveness of sin and His own declaration

of their righteousness with Him through faith in His Son,

the Lord Jesus Christ. If you haven’t yet, would you trust

Jesus Himself to save you and to bring you to heaven with

Him when He returns.

Dr. Mitchell will go on to share the Lord’s program, the

Lord’s own schedule to fulfill His purpose of dying for the

world on the cross. Nothing and no one would be able to

stop Him from fulfilling God’s purpose and plan for Him.

Dr. Mitchell will finish our last lesson on the Lord’s

healing of the woman having been bound by Satan for 18 long

years. We are in Luke 13:11-23.

The Lord goes on to show us the two comparisons of

what the kingdom of God is like. Jesus compares it to a

mustard seed growing to a huge size. Then He compares

the kingdom of God to leaven which permeated an entire

mixture of flour.

Our third scene shows our Lord going through the towns and

villages teaching, when someone asked Him if there

were only a few being saved.

So the Lord gives the parable of the narrow door

through which people need to enter to be saved if there is

to be any hope at all. Jesus is the open door.

Luke writes of two things in Luke 13:6-13.

In the first, he focuses our attention on Jesus’ parable

of a fig tree. He came seeking fruit from it for 3 years.

Here our Lord is speaking of the nation of Israel.

He wanted their acknowledgement of Him as their

Messiah and King. Yet they had not.

In the parable, the vinedresser asks to let the tree stand

for yet another, 4th year and see if it would bear it’s

fruit.

Here, some Bible scholars see the possibility that our Lord

ministered 4 years from His initial preparation for

ministry until His ascension from the Mount of Olives after

His resurrection.

The next scene Luke shows us is Jesus healing a woman whose back was so bent that she was absolutely unable to

stand up straight.

In our passage, Luke 13:1-5, Jesus is quite aware of current

events in Jerusalem.

We are listening to Dr. John G. Mitchell on the Unchanging

Word Bible Broadcast.

There were two incidents referred to in this passage which

Dr. Mitchell discusses. One concerns the Galileans whose

blood Pilate mingled with their sacrifices. The other had to

do with 18 men who died when a tower in Jerusalem, called

Siloam, fell on them and killed them all.

The supposition was that these people were worse sinners

than all others because bad things happened to them.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Jesus speaks to those reporting these current events of the

day happening in the capital city -- Jerusalem that unless

they repent they too would perish like those of whom they

had reported.

These need to believe in Jesus too.

We are in Luke 12:49-59 with Dr. John G. Mitchell on the

Luke is writing to confirm to his friend, the most excellent

Theophilus, the words he had heard and been taught

concerning Jesus of Nazareth.

Now, Jesus let’s the people know of His distress

concerning His upcoming crucifixion and resurrection which

He will accomplish in a few more months. His distress is

shown in Heb.5:7-8 where our Lord prayed to be delivered out

of death, and was heard by God His Father.

Jesus then calls out the people for their lack of

discernment concerning the current realities surrounding

them, that is, discernment of the spiritual realities. These

realities were relationships in the home and family and the

reality of His own personal presence as their Messiah, which

they were not acknowledging.

Here is Dr. Mitchell.

Once again, Luke gives us a snapshot of our Lord. This time

the Lord is instructing His disciples concerning His coming to

earth a second time.

Dr. Mitchell will give us an overview of this passage which

Jesus spoke. The bottom line is for each believer to be ready

for the Lord's coming while being faithful to the task and

ministry which he has received from the Lord.

Dr. Mitchell also makes a distinction between the Lord's

coming for the church in the air at the rapture and the Lord's

coming to the earth at His second coming.

The call for you and me is to be a faithful steward with one's

ministry and life with our time, talent and treasure while waiting for Christ.

Let's turn with Dr. Mitchell to his exposition in Luke 12:35-48

on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Thank you for being with us as we continue from our last

lesson where Jesus, having warned of covetousness, went

on to share a parable concerning laying up treasure for one's

self but not being rich toward God.

So now Jesus comforts His disciples once again. He tells

us not to be anxious or worry about our life even as the world's

worry and anxiety surrounds us on a daily basis.

Then, Jesus ends up by saying "For where your treasure is,

there will your heart be also." Is your top priority God's

priority? As it is written in Colossians 3:1-2 "being raised up

with Christ, we are to set our mind on things above, where

Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, not on things on

earth."

Our study in Luke 12 continues in vs. 10 of Luke chapter

12. In this lesson, Dr. Mitchell covers two sections.

The first follows on from our last lesson on confessing

the Lord Jesus before people. The focus is on how the

Holy Spirit will teach one what to say in one's testimony

to others.

The second section has to do with being aware of every

kind of covetousness.

Dr. Mitchell relates in detail the danger of covetousness

for a man's life does not consist in the abundance of

things he possesses . In 1 John 2:16 the pride of life

is the boasting of one's personal possessions, or personal position.

The Lord goes on to provide an applicable parable of the

fool who laid up treasure for himself and was not rich

toward God.

Jesus now speaks and warns His disciples of the leaven

of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. The word hypocrisy

means to act under a guise, like an actor playing a part

while wearing a costume to give the appearance of reality.

These religious rulers were doing this, playing the part

of having a relationship with God, which they did not have.

They proved this by rejecting Jesus, God's Son. There

was no reality or truth in them.

Jesus warns us, His disciples, of these kind of religious

leaders. Keep your eyes and ears on Jesus who is the

truth.

Next, Jesus gives us His encouragement about the detail

of God's care for each one of us. Dr. Mitchell relates that

even our times are in His hands, during which, we

can confess Jesus as our savior and Lord.
