As I read through these first four verses of Luke,

I hear Luke addressing the “most excellent Theophilus”.

His is a Greek name and he must have been in a position

of authority or at least a man of some publicly recognized stature. Theophilus, who according

to the text, had been verbally taught about the life of Christ.

Now, Luke is writing to him to give him a written

account of what they had previously heard and been

taught. They can now refer back to its truth and

accuracy and not forget it.

Even though others had previously written, Luke deemed it

appropriate to write an orderly account of the life of

Jesus on earth although he himself was not

personally present with Christ in those days.

Dr. Mitchell begins our study in the Gospel

of Luke on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Welcome to the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast as we

commence a journey through the Gospel of Luke with our

teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell who is finishing up his

overview of this gospel.

His aim is for us to fall in love with the savior, Jesus

Christ. Our Lord is presented in this gospel as the

lovely one who is precious and chosen in the sight of God

His Father.

Dr. Mitchell brings out the fact that from all four Gospels

we see Jesus raising 3 people from the dead. Two of the

three are found here in Luke. The other is in John.

Jesus demonstrates His power over death even before

His own resurrection from the dead.

Let’s join our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell, on the

Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to finish up this overview

of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

The Gospel of Luke will be the starting point of our study

as Dr. Mitchell gives us an overview and exhortation from

this Gospel.

First of all, he gives us a short overview of several

chapters of Luke to show how the savior is a man among men.

Jesus is proclaimed as one who is a friend of tax gatherers

and sinners.

Jesus read from the book of Isaiah from which He declared

that He was anointed by the Holy Spirit to preach the

gospel to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives,

and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those

who are oppressed and to proclaim the favorable year of

the Lord.

Let’s join our teacher, Dr. John G. Mitchell, on the

Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to give us an overview of

Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.

The Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast begins a new series

on the Gospel of Luke. Dr. Mitchell will be giving 3

lessons in overview comparing and contrasting the four

Gospels before beginning his exposition of the Gospel of

Luke.

Each of the Gospel writers presents the person and work of our Lord Jesus

Christ from his divinely revealed perspective and focus as

to who this Jesus of Nazareth is.

So to begin Dr. Mitchell looks at the contrasts between

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each gospel writer was

inspired of God to write without error God’s revelation to him concerning this Jesus.

Matthew writes to Jewish believers. Mark writes to

Roman gentiles. Luke writes to a gentile Greek believer

named Theophilus. John writes to everyone that we may

believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God.

Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast.

Our study in the Ministry of the Holy Spirit finishes up

with His work towards the world.

In John 16:8-11, Jesus tells us that He will send the Holy

Spirit who will in turn convince the world of sin,

righteousness and of judgement.

Dr. Mitchell finished up this series on the Holy Spirit

with looking at the last two things with which the Holy

Spirit will confront the unbelieving world. These are, the

righteousness of Christ Himself, and the judgment of the

ruler of this world, that is the devil.

The focus of the Spirit of God to the world is on the

person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Let’s open our Bibles to John 16:8-11 with our teacher

Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast to

conclude our study on the Ministry of the Holy Spirit.

As we have been learning about the Ministry of the Holy

Spirit we now come to His work as it relates to the world.

John 16:8-11 gives us Jesus’s own words which tell us of

who and what the Holy Spirit will be ministering to in

the world.

John gives us Jesus’ words when He was preparing His

eleven disciples in the upper room at passover for His

upcoming death, burial, resurrection and His appearing to

them once again.

Jesus gives three specific things the Spirit would convince

the world of. First is the sin of unbelief, that they don’t believe in Jesus. The second is righteousness, that Our

Lord has gone to the Father, and thirdly, of judgment, that

the ruler of this world has been judged.

Let’s join Dr. Mitchell, John 16:8-11 on the Unchanging Word

Bible Broadcast.

Moving on from the ministry of the Spirit to the believer we

will now look at the Ministry of the Spirit of God to the

world. This is based on Jesus’ words found in John 16:8-11.

Dr. Mitchell will take us immediately to 2 Thessalonians

2:6-12. In this passage the mystery of lawless in already

at work. But the Spirit of God is at work in the world

through the Church to hold back, to restrain the lawless one

from being revealed. The Spirit of God through the church is holding back the lawlessness until the Spirit is taken away.

Dr. Mitchell gives us several examples concerning the

Holy Spirit working in the world, even to this day.

As we study along with Dr. Mitchell, on the Unchanging Word

Bible Broadcast, let’s turn to 2 Thessalonians 2:6-12 to begin.

In this our last lesson on the subject of the Bible’s

teaching on healing, he gives us several Biblical examples

from the lives of people written about in the Scriptures.

Dr. Mitchell will give us an overview of the 3 reasons for

sickness and 3 reasons for death.

On what grounds does God heal? Dr. Mitchell gives us two

basis on which God does heal and that in accordance with His

will. When a person prays on the ground of redemption for the glory of God, God may heal. He may not always heal, but

God can and does heal for His Glory and the glory of His Son,

Jesus Christ.

As we study along with Dr. Mitchell, seeking to

bring to light the truth of healing for the body of Christ,

on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, let’s turn to 1 st

Corinthians 11:30 to begin.

Dr. Mitchell continues on the subject of healing with the

question: “Is the healing of the body found in the

atonement? on the ground of the work of Christ?”

Dr. Mitchell will discuss John 14:12 doing the works of

Christ and even greater works than Christ. Would Jesus be

referring to healing and miracles in these words?

Dr. Mitchell will mention some of the saints who suffered

greatly in the body, yet glorified God even in their

suffering, seeing it as a blessing.

He also discusses James 5:14 where the elders of the

church are called to anoint the sick in the name of the

Lord.

We continue on the subject of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Our topic in this lesson is the gift of healing. Dr.

Mitchell devotes three lessons to this gift of the Spirit.

First, we will be looking at 3 passages dealing with the

healing.

However Dr. Mitchell will focus on James 5:14 and 1 Peter

2:24 in which the word “healing” is written.

We will see that one passage deals with healing for the

body. In the other, healing is for the soul, or spirit.

Dr. Mitchell makes it evident that God can and does heal

sicknesses. There is no doubt about this from Scripture.
