Guest: Michael Skurla, Chief Product Officer at Radix IoT

In this episode, Michael joins Uncle Marv to discuss the world of IoT and its impact on IT professionals. They talk about how IoT is not just about devices, but about systems and making them talk system to system to get more of an outcome from it. Michael gives an example of how IoT can be used in the building space to connect systems for heating and air conditioning, security, lighting, and fire services to determine air conditioning loads that were running about four times the other facilities. Uncle Marv expresses his excitement about learning more about IoT and asks Michael questions to help IT professionals get started with IoT. Michael shares his thesis that IoT should be tied to the network to monitor it and help clients.

A bottle of water in a supermarket costs about .50. The same bottle of water cost $2 in a bar. In a high-quality restaurant or hotel it can be worth up to $3. At an airport or on a plane, you may be charged up to $5. The bottle and the brand is the same, the only thing that changes is the place. Each place gives a different value to the same product. When you feel like you are worth nothing and everyone around you belittles you, change places, do not stay there. Have the courage to change places and go to a place where you are given the value you deserve. Surround yourself with people who really appreciate your worth. Don't settle for less!!!

We had our hands full with converting 44 workstations from domain computers to remote ones, migrating files from one office to another, and transitioning 51 users to new RDS servers. This included setting up one physical server with two Hyper-V servers. 

The project is part one of a $150,000 network upgrade. The law firm had seven offices, but due to the pandemic and the shift to remote work, they consolidated their offices. You'll also get to hear about my struggles with an office administrator who isn't an IT professional, and how I navigated the challenge of orchestrating this upgrade for their firm.

Domotz is a network monitoring platform that helps service providers be more efficient and proactive in handling the systems they deploy on networks. Domotz provides remote connectivity into platforms, configuration backups, and alerts when changes have been made on the infrastructure. 

Domotz has announced a channel partner program to offer better support, discounts, and tiered pricing. The program aims to create an effective channel where everyone gets their fair share of margins. The benefits of the program include priority support, regular updates, and access to beta features. 

Domotz has also acquired GlassWire for business, a Windows-based application that sits on a Windows machine and helps the end-user better understand the applications and services that are running on that machine. The acquisition of GlassWire is a way for Domotz to expand its network monitoring capabilities and provide more value to its customers.

We talk about the challenges of communication and managing people in the context of technology projects. Andre started his IT journey at CompUSA, working his way up to become the CEO of a multi-million dollar business. We discuss how he got his start, and his journey from growing up in Miami Gardens to taking jobs setting up computers for high-end clients. 

He shares how he was able to navigate his way through a non-compete agreement and find success in the managed services and cybersecurity space.

He also explains how he applied the 80/20 rule to his business by firing 80% of his clients and shifting his focus to the top 20%. That leads to a quick mention of The Pumpkin Plan and Built to Sell, two books that have helped him with restructuring his business.
