When Artemus Ogletree was 19, he left his family in Birmingham to hitchhike to California. On January 2, 1935 he checked into the Hotel President in Kansas City under, giving them a fake name and address. Two days later, hotel staff found him badly beaten in his room, which was covered in blood. Unfortunately, he died just a few hours later and because he had checked in under an alias, police had little to go off. His mother would continue to receive letters from her son for almost two years after his death. Eventually she would identify the unknown murdered man as Artemus, but would his attacker ever be identified?

Yingying Zhang was born in 1990 in China and by the time she was 27, she had graduated with a Master Degree and had traveled to the United States to conduct research on photosynthesis at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We couldn’t help but give this book 5 stars!

When Issei Sagawa was only a child, he had a dream that he and his brother were in a boiling pot of water as if being cooked as a meal for someone. He would later say this is where his fascination with cannibalism began. On June 11,1981, while studying in Paris, Issei murdered fellow female classmate, Renee Hartvelt. He then acted out his fantasies and consumed pieces of Renee’s body over the course of several days. Issei was caught by French police, but would eventually be deported back to his homeland, Japan. Issei was immediately admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Would he continue to serve time for his horrendous crimes, or is Issei walking the streets now, a free man?

In 1922, Bath Township, Michigan approved the creation of the first Bath Consolidated school district. Unfortunately, in order to pay for the new school, the township property taxes were increased. Andrew Kehoe, Michigan native and trustee of the new Bath township school board, was outraged by the tax increase and his loss in the town clerk 1925 election and began plotting a massacre of the citizens and schoolchildren of Bath Township. On May 18, 1927, he would put his plan into action. Andrew would become the mastermind behind America’s deadliest school massacre to date, which would claim the lives of 45 innocent victims, including 38 children.

Between February 1976 and March 1977, four children living in the Oakland county area of Michigan would go missing and unfortunately found murdered. Each child was abducted while walking just blocks from their homes, held captive for a few days, where they would be fed and bathed, and then murdered. Their bodies were dropped in different spots throughout Oakland county. Would the person responsible for the murders of these innocent children ever be found? Or would there never be enough evidence to bring justice to the victims families?

In 1861, a merchant brigantine was built in Nova Scotia and named the Amazon. By 1872, the boat had changed ownership multiple times, had major changes made to it, and acquired it’s new name, Mary Celeste. In early November of 1872, Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, and their 2 year old daughter, along with seven crew members would set sail on Mary Celeste across the Atlantic. A few days later, the ship was found abandoned by another cargo ship at sea. There were no passengers on board, the lifeboat was gone, and there were no signs of a struggle. What happened to the Mary Celeste’s passengers?
