Understanding practitioner distress: Should regulation be kinder?

Listen Later

The central aim of health regulation is to protect patients; the challenge is to do that while making our regulatory processes as humane as possible. Since 2017, Ahpra has been systematically gathering feedback from health practitioners (and notifiers) about their experience of being involved in an investigative or disciplinary process.

Hear Susan Biggar talk to Stuart Hammond about the key findings and recommendations behind practitioner distress during a regulatory process and the actions Ahpra is now taking so that they can take action to decrease the risks, while maintaining a clear focus on patient safety.

Susan Biggar is the National Manager, Regulatory Experience and Engagement at Aphra. Since 2014 she has trained over 4000 health professionals in patient centred care and she has served for 15 years as a consumer representative on health-related committees.  Susan is a writer by background, with degrees from Duke and Stanford universities, Susan has written for publications such as The Age, Good Weekend and The Big Issue.
