  • Exploring the Spiritual Lessons of "The Grapes of Wrath" | Faith and Film Series | 06.22.25
The Grapes of Wrath, based on John Steinbeck's classic novel, is a powerful exploration of human dignity, social justice, and the pursuit of a better life. The film challenges us to reflect on economic inequality, the struggles of the marginalized, and the enduring power of hope and solidarity in the face of adversity. It calls us to act with compassion and empathy toward those who suffer and to advocate for justice in the world. Join us for our summer sermon series as we journey through the realms of faith, humanity, and the divine, illuminated by the magic of film. During the week, we gather in community to view a diverse selection of films that captivate the heart and mind. Each screening will be followed by a discussion where we unpack the film's themes, symbolism, and relevance to our shared journey. Films start at 6pm sharp in the Don Krehbiel Music Center. Discussion is from 7:45-8:15pm. On Sunday mornings, join us as we continue to explore the films and their lessons in worship. First Unitarian Church of Dallas is devoted to genuine inclusion, depth and joy, reason and spirit. We have been a voice of progressive religion in Dallas since 1899, working toward a more just and compassionate world in all of what we do. We hope that when you come here your life is made more whole through experiences of love and service, spiritual growth, and an open exploration of the divine. In this Unitarian Universalist Pride Sunday sermon, Rev. T. J. Fitzgerald weaves together the story of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, queer theology, and the lived realities of LGBTQ+ people. From Miles Morales' transformation into Spider-Man to the words of Audre Lorde and James Baldwin, Rev. • Exploring the Spiritual Lessons of "Moana 2" | Faith and Film Series | 06.01.25
In this sermon, Rev. Beth Dana opens our Faith and Film Series with a deep look at Disney's Moana 2 through the lens of Unitarian Universalist faith, Pacific Island history, and womanist theology. Moana's journey to reconnect her people becomes a powerful metaphor for how we find our way in hard times - when the path isn't clear, when we feel lost, or when we're trying to heal what's been broken. Rev. Dana weaves in the true story of Queen LiliΚ»uokalani, Hawaii's last monarch, and reflects on the spiritual power of aloha, the wisdom of our ancestors, and how we move forward with love and justice. Whether you're a fan of Moana, exploring spirituality, or seeking hope in uncertain times, this sermon offers guidance, courage, and connection. πŸ’š Consider making a one-time contribution to First Church today. • 5 Rules for Resistance | Rev. T.J. FitzGerald | 05.25.25
In this Unitarian Universalist Memorial Day sermon, Rev. T. J. Fitzgerald reflects on the legacy of faith, resistance, and sacrifice. Drawing on the stories of Michael Servetus and John Calvin, and the painful truths of war, from the Civil War to World War I to modern-day Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, this sermon challenges us to honor the fallen not just with memory, but with action, courage, and hope. Rev. Fitzgerald offers five principles of resistance as spiritual tools for navigating a world fractured by fanaticism, injustice, and authoritarian power. Grounded in Unitarian Universalist theology, this message uplifts the enduring values of truth, justice, and love as forces more powerful than hate or tyranny. With references to religious history, personal testimony, and contemporary moral voices like Rev. William Barber III, Rhiannon Giddens, Nick Cave, and Mary Oliver, this sermon calls us to embody resistance in art, community, well-being, solidarity, and fierce hope. πŸ’š Consider making a one-time contribution to First Church today. • Progressive Religion vs Progressive Politics: What's the Difference? | Tiny Pulpit Talks: 043
What does it mean to be a progressive Unitarian Universalist faith? In this episode of Tiny Pulpit Talks, Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter, Rev. T. J. FitzGerald, and Rev. Beth Dana sit down in the Minister's Study to explore what it really means when Unitarian Universalists call themselves a progressive religious community. They reflect on the bold ideas that shaped the earliest movements toward Unitarianism and Universalism, including the radical belief that Jesus could have been fully human and that revelation is never sealed. Together, they trace how these revolutionary beginnings have shaped a tradition that values growth, openness, and an ongoing search for truth and meaning. In this conversation, they discuss: πŸ”₯ The progressive roots of Unitarian Universalism πŸ”₯ How Unitarian Universalists embrace a living tradition that continues to evolve πŸ”₯ Why progressive faith differs from progressive politics πŸ”₯ The enduring core beliefs of Unitarian Universalism, such as the oneness of God, the inherent worth and goodness of people, and salvation through character and action Rev. Daniel, Rev. TJ, and Rev. Beth remind us that Unitarian Universalism is not static β€” it is a dynamic faith that grows alongside human understanding, rooted in deep commitments to love, justice, and hope. 🌱 Enjoy the podcast?
