Tara shares what the journey of diagnosis up to what her life is like day to day now. She talks about the emotional and physical changes and finding freedom in acceptance of a life long illness. We chat about the grief of a diagnosis and illness, health privilege in relationships and the strategies she learned to manage shame and boundaries.

  • The role of active listening and mental health in teens sharing their challenges with guests Patty Sproule and Hanna Mughal

    This week on Unpacked we are chatting with guests Patricia Sproule and Hanna Mughal. Patricia or Patty as we know her is the President and CEO of Sproule Consulting, Executive Director with Synergy, an amazing advocate for youth in Chestermere. Hanna Mughal, University Student Research and Synergy employee and long time advocate for youth in Chestermere. We chat with Patty and Hanna about the need to listen and ask questions on youth safety and how to best serve the physical, emotional, social and mental health well being of the young people in our city. The need comes out of a response to a tragic suicide of a local youth and this group of community leaders were desperate to prevent this from happening again. Patty and Hanna share with us the process and their heart break and walk us through the survey results.  The data may be specific to Chestermere, the common thread of challenges for our teenagers affects all of our neighbourhoods.

  • Entrepreneurship and building a business with your significant other with guests Clint and Robyn Pigeon

    This week on Unpacked we are chatting with guests Clint and Robyn Pigeon, Owners, entrepreneurs, authors and hosts of @BusinessLifeofHusbandandWife. Clint and Robyn Pigeon each ran their own business prior to meeting and getting married. In 2013 they started a new venture together that started in a ten-by-ten-foot basement room that has since grown into a multi-city operation creating half a million dollars a year in income. We chat with Clint and Robyn about the ups and downs of running a business as a married couple. They share with us their passion for entrepreneurship and excitement for personal and professional growth.  Clint and Robyn chat with us on some practical tips for business owners and are new to the enneagram so we briefly discuss what types they could be.

  • From brokenness to hope in the world with guest Cody Anderson

    This week on Unpacked we are chatting with guest Musician and Pastor Cody Anderson, Faith Covenant Church, Winnipeg Manitoba. Cody chats with us about the process of songwriting and in particular a song he wrote after travelling to Haiti. We chat with him about his life and story and in particular the grief and emotional experience this year his family has gone through with his daughter going through chemotherapy. Cody shares what he is learning about finding hope and beauty in the brokenness of the world. We talk about our shared experiences of going to Haiti and how although the needs may be less obvious in our communities in Canada they are still very present. Cody breaks down with us how a song comes together, the inspiration and how the songs on this album are meant to bring hope.

  • Exploring and approaching self-harm with guest Ashely Vogelaar, Registered Provisional Psychologist

    This week on Unpacked we are chatting with guest Ashley Vogelaar, Registered Provisional Psychologist in Airdrie, Alberta.  Ashely chats with us about self harm and her modality of therapy Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)  to treat the behaviour. We chat with Ashley on the intent behind self harm, how to assess the risk, the strategies to take when caring for someone who is carrying out self harm and how to regulate your own emotions in the moment of crisis. Ashley shares with us some of the root causes of self harm and the ways parents and caregivers can begin to support and approach new ways of coping.  She shares her background of becoming a psychologist and her passion to have the tools to share in order to help people to find freedom and healing.

Enneagram subtypes are a combination of your core type and your instinct (the 3 basic human instincts that are essential to survive). We chat about the three basic instincts and how they play out in each enneagram type. Evan and Tara chat about how instincts are essential for human experience and where your attention goes for each. This affects all aspects of your life - relationships, decisions, work and parenting. The three basic instincts are self-preservation, social and one to one and we are dominant in one and that adds a more specific layer of how each enneagram type plays out.  Evan and Tara share  a bit about each  of the gifts and the tension and the growth path towards healing.

  • Creating connection, empathy and awareness through meeting 10K friends with Rob Lawless

    This week on Unpacked we are chatting with guest Rob Lawless, founder of @Robs10Kfriends. Rob chats with about his mission to meet 10,000 people one one one for 1 hour at a time. Rob graduated summa cum laude from Penn State University with a degree in Finance and minors in Accounting & Entrepreneurship. After graduation, he had a career with Deloitte Consulting as a Business Analyst in Strategy & Operations. After 1.5 years into it, he pulled what he calls a Millennial move – took a large pay cut and left it all. Shortly after starting Rob's 10K friends. We chat about Rob's passion for the project, where his  genuine curiosity in hearing people's stories comes from.  We talk about the challenges to share a dream and a vision that people don't understand and the experiences of failures and successes as an entrepreneur. He shares his learnings from meeting over 5200 people for agenda-less conversations. The overwhelming theme to him is how every human interaction has the potential to change your life.
