The term Imposter Syndrome has become a huge buzzword in our society and I hear it more often among women - even more from women of color. While I believe it's great to put a name on something, I believe the danger is when a hidden trick of the enemy is adopted and normalized. So this week we're calling our not-so-good friend Imposter Syndrome to the carpet to expose what she truly is and uncouple from her for good. Come on in as I pull the bandaid off another wound - the desire to be liked or accepted. Between my pre-teen years and my 20s, I had fallen into this identity of being likeable and agreeable to gain the approval of others. The issue is I agreed or went along with things that I truly didn't like. I was just to afraid to voice or be who I really wanted to be because I didn't want to feel the familiar sting of being betrayed or disliked. I was willing to lie to myself and inflict pain on myself vs being honest with others. Over time, that brought me to a low place and today the healed version of me got to turn that on its head and see the light that comes with putting your stake in the ground. The rise of functioning anxiety does not sit well with me. I didn't understand the severity of it until I experienced it personally. While there are levels of anxiety that require treatment, I'm not discussing that in this episode (and not licensed to give medical advice). I'm talking about functional anxiety that can be alleviated by lifestyle changes that we often ignore.
