  • Unsigned518 Podcast #65, Mista Pigz
Mista Pigz is definitely a presence in the 518 hip-hop scene, and I was familiar with his music before he came over to the Dazzle Den, so I was extra-stoked to have him as a guest. We talk about everything, from his early influences and how he developed his style, to how he came up with the name Mista Pigz. He's got a lot of great stuff coming up and I truly expect his name to be synonymous with 518 hip-hop for a long time to come.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #64, Flat Wounds

Flat Wounds is a very new band, but I expect a lot of great things from them in the future. Two of the members came from local favorite Man Must Explore, but Flat Wounds has a very different sound. Very heavily influenced by grunge and metal, Flat Wounds has some seriously rocking tunes. It took me back to the early days of the heavier grunge movement, which was my main music when it was current. They are hard at work to release their first music, but you can hear two of their songs on this episode. Get to know Flat Wounds with me and enjoy episode 64 of Unsigned518.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #63, Adequate Phil
I had never met the boys in Adequate Phil before, but by the time the recording of this episode was over, I felt like we were friends. I even invited them to stay and hang out for a bit in the Dazzle Den. We ended up having a few beers and even doing an impromptu jam when John Woods, the drummer for ShortWave RadioBand dropped in. It was a rad night and these are rad dudes.

I literally cannot describe Adequate Phil's music and do it any justice. Is it dreamy synth-pop, is it ethereal rock, is it hip-hop, or spacey folk music? It's kind of all of that, but again, my description will do it no justice.

Whatever you'd call it, it's catchy as hell.

Check out this episode and get to know the guys in Adequate Phil right along with me. We'll find out how the band came together and where they might be heading and we also hear 3 songs, including a live in-studio song.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #62, Tom O'Connor

This episode was supposed to air before the Nolanauts Mardi Gras show at Nanola, but unfortunately due to my computer being in the shop, that couldn't happen. Luckily my computer is back, so it may be a bit late to catch their show, it's never too late to rock with Nolanauts!

Tom is the owner of Jive Hive Live, which is not a professional music venue, but rather a place for friends to hang out and make music. Several 518 bands have gone to Tom's place and played some music. live stream the performance, or even make an album with the recordings. All of this is done with no money or incentive exchanged. Again, it is just a place for friends to gather and make music. A very magical place.

Tom is also in Nolanauts, which is an amazing funk/rock/soul band with a very heavy lean on the feel and influence of New Orleans music and culture. In this conversation, Tom and I not only discuss the Jive Hive and Nolanauts but how NOLA inspired Tom and why he feels that music deserves representation in the 518. Nolanauts just released their first original single and along with their blistering live shows, you can expect a ton more from Tom, Nolanauts, and Jive Hive Live.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #61, Frankie Cavone
A slightly different episode this week, as I do not have a band or musician on, but a man who does a ton for 518 music, Frankie Cavone. Frankie has been on the scene for a while now, and while we had never met, I was definitely familiar with his work. From Mirth Films, to Wild in the Tree Skate/Music Festival to the Listen Up Awards with Radio Radio X, Frankie has been involved in a lot of cool music events happening in the 518. I could go on, but I suggest you just listen to the episode immediately and you'll get to be a fly on the wall while I get to know Frankie Cavone. Frankie also plays a couple of tunes from some of his favorite 518 artists.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #60, John and Rock of A Brave Face
I met with John and Rick of A Brave Face on the coldest night of the year, so it was awesome that they braved the elements to come out to the Den. They have been friends for a long time and making music together for a long time as well. They are also in the Metal outfit The One They Fear, but A Brave Face is a much softer side. They are finely crafted pop-rock tunes that would fit right in, in nearly any radio station's programming. I talk to them about the origin of this band as well as The One They Fear. We also listen to tracks from both bands. So check out episode 60 and get to know John and Rick of A Brave Face (and The One They Fear)

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #59, Jes Hudak
I've known Jes for about a dozen years, but it had been a decade since we'd seen each other, so it was really cool to catch up. Jes has gone from Saratoga to NYC to LA in that ten years. Twice. She has excelled in the music business in all three locations but considers Saratoga home. This is a great listen, as Jes has done it all in the music industry and gives great insight into the inner workings.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #58, A Little Overboard
I talked with Stephen King and Pappy O'Doul of A Little Overboard. While the band is technically really new, having only been a band since November '22, the guys in the band have been playing and recording together for years. Their first single "Goodbye For Now" has been getting a huge amount of attention, with online streams in the tens of thousands. They even purchased a bus and are ready to turn it into a tour bus and hit the road. They are ambitious, talented and sure to make a name for themselves even well outside of the 518.

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #57, Mount Zod of The Holy Red Lights
Mount Zod of The Holy Red Lights and I go back a few years, so it was cool when he reached out and said that he had a new music project that he wanted to talk about. I was expecting a rock-n-roll band of some kind, but that is definitely not what The Holy Red Lights is. Zod has created something totally different, using a synthesizer and samples. It is hard to describe, but is certainly a fascinating soundscape. Check out The Holy Red Lights and hear for yourself how Mount Zod creates the music with the most bare-bones of recording equipment. It's really cool how he puts it all together

  • Unsigned518 Podcast #56, Girth Control

Girth Control are an amazing Ska/Punk band who are not only witty, crafty and prolific with their songwriting, but are also just genuinely nice dudes. This one was recorded in December '22 and in the time since we recorded it, I would without question say I have become a big fan of Girth Control. Their songs are fast, funny and well written. Hear the story of how this band with three lead singers came to be and also how they pissed off the Ben Franklin tour guide that one time at a show.
