We recorded this episode back in September, but decided to wait and release it until the EP was released. Alec's EP, "How Are We Fine?" is one of my favorite releases of the year. I would even put it above some of my favorite National acts. It's that good. Hear about Alec's musical journey up to now and listen to 2 songs off the EP, as well as one from Alec's earlier full-length release. Then, when you are done with the episode, buy Alec's EP, "How Are We Fine?", I promise you won't regret it.
A little something different this week. Mikey Baish is the guest host and Andy Scullin is the guest. They talk about how ShortWave RadioBand was formed and how the band evolved. From an acoustic duo to the punky 5-piece they are today. They discuss how ShortWave came out of nowhere to place in the Nippertown March Music Madness Final Four. Also how that contest played a major role in this podcast becoming a reality, so, check out Andy and Mikey's conversation as the host becomes the guest.
I had the chance recently to talk to Oona and James of Drank The Gold. We go into how the duo was formed, how they got their interesting name and how James played a role in the early beginnings of Unsigned518. Drank The Gold also perform some songs live in-studio, which was a real treat for me personally, as I love Irish music and almost anything with a fiddle. Check out Drank The Gold on Episode 42 of Unsigned518.
It doesn't take long to realize that Yort hails out of Troy and does so with much pride of the Collar City, including their clever logo, which is a play on the popular "Enjoy Troy". While it may be easy to see where they are from, their musical style is hard to pin down to just one style or influence. They've also added Seth Biskind (of Headless Relatives) to write and sing lyrics over their formally instrumental songs. Now that they are in their final form, I highly suggest you check out Yort. A great place to start is right here on Unsigned518.
I met Deb this Summer at Nipperfest, but I've been familiar with her music for a while now, so it was really cool to have her out to the Dazzle Den. Deb has a storied career that is so interesting, it could be made into a Movie. We go into a little history of her music career and she also reveals a project in the works that will chronicle her journey thus far. This one was so much fun to record, as Deb is simply a pleasure to be around. She performs one song live in-studio, but this episode also features a song with her band, Dandelion Wine from their Jive Hive Live session.
These guys rock! That is the absolute truth. Check out this episode and learn the history of the Hard Luck Souls, but more than anything, do yourself a favor and listen to their music! You have my word that you will not be disappointed. So, if you are unfamiliar, let me introduce you to The Hard Luck Souls!
Embe Esti has a sound that is hard to place in any one category. Part Funk, part Soul, part Jazz, part World-Beat and the list goes on. No matter what you are looking for, chances are Embe Esti has it. I got the chance to have the whole band over to the Dazzle Den to hear the origin story of Embe Esti and get to know all of the members. It was a cool experience for me and I hope this episode will be a reflection of that.
518 Stoner-Rock champs, Gozer came by the Dazzle Den recently and we talked about their formation, their inspiration and of course their music. They are certainly a band to check out, as they are very quickly leaving their mark on the 518! From their live shows, to their recent performance at the Jive Hive, Gozer is crushing it!
