Val Shannon's life may not have been what you think it was growing up.

At the age of 7, she had a heart for the Lord. She was the typical church camp, know-every-book-of-the-Bible, sang-solos-at-church kind of girl. As typical as that may have been, she was also a child of divorce. So by default that made Val fiercely independent, and also made her childhood much more challenging than most kids. As she entered middle school, she started doubting her faith, and everything she grew up believing. 

By the time high school rolled around, she had little hope left in the Lord and felt as though her life didn’t matter. She became depressed and figured God didn’t care about her. 

She craved love, acceptance, and normalcy, and didn’t know where to find it. 

Once in high school, she began drinking, and doing drugs and had little self-respect. For the most part, she appeared to have it all together. She was on the honor roll, worked 2 jobs, was a cheerleader, played sports, and had lots of friends. 

On the flip side, she was arrested more than once for theft, drinking, and drugs. Her self-respect continued to diminish. She tried to find what was missing through relationships with boys, which led to self-harm. What she really needed was a Savior.

Then, the summer before her senior year in high school she found out she was pregnant. 

When the pregnancy center volunteer told her the test was positive, her stance on abortion changed instantly. In a moment of crisis, all she knew to be true about the sacredness of life went out the window. 

She didn’t want to be a mom--she wanted an abortion. 

Seventeen.
Pregnant.
Scared.
With no idea what was about to happen.
