Values Based Living episodes

  • Juggling Parenting and Work with Values

Warning: this episode is for parents! Complete with a 9 month old playing in the background, this episode truly embodies what it means to be a multi-tasking parent. Ali interviews Kristina, VBL's Social Media Coordinator and dedicated values enthusiast, about what it's been like as a new mom with 2 kids and an otherwise full life.

Kristina shares her challenges and learnings, and how values have helped her find common ground with her 4 year old when they seem to want totally different things.

  • 5 Tips to Setting Manageable Goals

This is a bonus episode to acknowledge the new year. We have some tips to share when it comes to setting manageable goals. What better time to share them than the time of new year’s resolutions!

Here's a sneak peek of the 5 tips to Setting Manageable Goals:

    1. Identify how you currently set goals. What gets in your way about your current process? What works?
    2. Instead of diving right into your goals, try starting with your values. Identify a value that has been present for you lately and THEN come up with a goal that might satisfy it.
    3. List all of the things you can do to meet this goal. No step is too small.
    4. Identify what other values might be at play in achieving your goal. Are there any that could get frustrated? Others that might get satisfied?
    5. Notice your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour as you're completing this exercise (and when you're taking steps to achieve this goal). As you’re writing down or imagining your goal, what’s coming up? Use this information to let you know how 'hot' or 'cold' you are in coming up with a goal that you will actually want to achieve.
    6. Want more? Learn about our Reverse Goal Setting workshop that dives more deeply into this process.

    7. Are you a good person if you're living your values?

We explore the difference between "being a good person" and "knowing our values". Are they the same thing? If I know and live my values am I probably a good person?

Coreen, Kristina, and Ali have some fun with this topic and throw out their thoughts from a conflict resolution, coaching, and values perspective.

    9. Marketing and Values: A Dissonance Resolved!

Consider this episode a model for one way to check in to see if you're living your values in business.

Coreen and I have struggled for years to add a values based lens to our marketing. We've been chipping away at it incrementally, but recently we had a breakthrough around our marketing vision and thought it would be fun and insightful to record our values assessment of our new marketing vision. We don't necessarily share what our marketing plan is in this episode (mostly to keep you from the monotony of it); instead, we review our business and personal values to see to what extent we're in alignment with our updated marketing strategy and offer some examples.

This episode is for people who want to see what it's like to weave values into an initiative like marketing, or for people who want to know more about the values of Values Based Living and of us:).

      VBL Values:

Teamwork, Get ‘er done, Authenticity, Meaning, Fun/Joy, Community, Measurable High Value Content for Participants, Simplicity/Ease, Playing Big

Note: We reference a marketing resource, Tad Hargrave with Marketing For Hippies, as a big reason why we're making great strides in our marketing. We're not getting anything tangible for pumping him up, we just like what he does:).

    10. Compulsive Lying and Values: The 7 Sacred Teachings (Part 2)

Coreen and Ali are so grateful to have access to the Seven Sacred Teachings and to be able to refer to them as a guide. They each picked a teaching that lines up with one of their values. In this episode (Part 2), Coreen describes how the teaching of TRUTH was incredibly helpful in navigating her relationship with a compulsive liar.

See part 1 in the previous episode for Ali's example, in which she shares how the teaching of LOVE helped get her through a messy and painful business partner separation. We recommend starting with this episode, as it touches on what the Seven Sacred Teachings are and why they are so important to Values Based Living.

We reference information from the 7 sacred teachings overview from Northwestern Polytechnic, who got their information from Empowering the Spirit, which guided us as well.

    12. Gifts, Parenting, Shadow and Values

This is sort of a continuation of episode 7 called "Values and Birthdays", so feel free to listen to that one first if you want to hear the full story.

We discuss how tricky it can be to forget about unwanted social pressures completely when you have kids. We also explore our own shadow values and attempt to explain what's going on for us when our values take the reins without our awareness.
