Ciceroândia, Brazil. “Hier, in 1646, werden de vrouwen van Tejucupapo als heldinnen behandeld omdat ze met hun wapens, samen met hun mannen, zonen en broers, 600 Nederlanders versloegen.” Deze tekst is afgedrukt op de plaquette van het Monumento das Trincheiras, in Goiana, Zona da Mata Norte in de staat Pernambuco, bevestigd aan een obelisk die is opgericht ter ere van de eerste veldslag in de Braziliaanse geschiedenis, die door vrouwen werd uitgevochten.

Ciceroândia, Brazil. ‘Here, in 1646, the women of Tejucupapo were treated as heroines for having, with their weapons, alongside their husbands, sons and brothers, repelled 600 Dutchmen who retreated defeated.’ This text is printed on the plaque of the Monumento das Trincheiras, in Goiana, Zona da Mata Norte in the state of Pernambuco, attached to an obelisk erected in honour of the first battle fought by women in Brazilian history.

A cidade do Recife está no Guinness Book, o livro dos recordes, por ser a sede do Galo da Madrugada, bloco de carnaval fundado em 1978 e, desde 1994, detentor do título de maior do mundo. Todo sábado de Carnaval, o bloco leva às ruas mais de dois milhões de pessoas em um desfile que tem sua apoteose aqui, na Avenida Guararapes, onde estamos agora.

Recife, Brazil. De stad Recife is terug te vinden in het Guinness Book of Records. Dit, vanwege de Galo da Madrugada, de Haan des Dageraads, een carnavalsgroep opgericht in 1978, die sinds 1994 het grootste carnaval ter wereld organiseert. Elke zaterdag van carnaval gaat de groep met ruim twee miljoen mensen de straat op in een parade die hier zijn apotheose heeft, aan de Avenida Guararapes, waar we ons nu bevinden.

The city of Recife is in the Guinness Book of Records for being the home of Galo da Madrugada, a carnival group founded in 1978 and which, since 1994, holds the title of hosting the largest carnival in the world. Every Saturday of Carnival, the group takes to the streets with more than two million people in a parade that culminates here, on Avenida Guararapes, where we are now.

Recife, Brazil. Se você chegou aqui atrás de uma grande herança histórica ao ar livre, deve ter se deparado com uma praça enorme, às margens de uma longa via chamada Avenida do Forte. Pode não ter percebido ainda mas, se olhar bem, a praça e a avenida são planas mas ao centro da área de lazer tem um elevação de terra que destoa do resto da paisagem.

Recife, Brazil. Mocht je naar dit enorme plein, aan de rand van de Avenida do Forte gekomen zijn om een stukje historisch erfgoed te ontdekken, dan heb je de juiste plek te pakken. Maar, je moet wel even goed kijken; het plein en de straat zijn plat, maar in het midden van het park is er een verhoging die boven de rest van het landschap uitsteekt.

Recife, Brazil. You might have come here looking for a great outdoor historical heritage site. What you find is a large square on the edge of a long road called Avenida do Forte. Well, you have arrived. If you look closely, the square and the avenue are flat, but in the centre of the green space, the raised earth stands out from the rest of the landscape.
