In this one act of coming back from the dead we catch a glimpse of how powerful the message of Jesus is. It’s not about ritual or religion it’s about a relationship that redefines our lives with God. We all must wrestle with who Jesus is. Will we embrace what he has done or walk away. Will we enter a relationship with him and have him define what it means to be human in God’s eyes?

Mark captures for us the horrific moment when Jesus is crucified alone on the cross. Almost everyone has abandoned Jesus. He hangs on a cross and dies. As he hangs there on the cross it’s the words of the centurion (vs39) where we have the answer to 4:41...who then is this?

Jesus takes a common Passover meal and reassigns the purpose and meaning. The church had been celebrating the meal for about 30-40yrs before Mark wrote the account of the Passover but everyone would have known the significant of looking back and forward. All through the gospel of Mark we're being set up for the last two moments that will be real time for Jesus and his disciples but have eternal impact.

It all leads to these opening moments of Jesus entering Jerusalem which sets the stage for what he has come to do. We see that the religious leaders have missed the mark and Jesus is about to create a new movement that reveals who he is and what he came to establish…God’s renewal of His Kingdom.

We all want to have a life of significance but sometimes that drive can get in the way of really understanding how to live and move within God’s economy. James and John request to sit on the right and left of Jesus in his Glory sets up a perfect moment for Jesus to come right out with his purpose in coming to earth. God’s kingdom is an upside down approach to putting things right side up. It’s about the willing to serve as Jesus served but to experience the ultimate price of giving his life up for you.

When Peter pulls Jesus aside to rebuke Jesus for talking about his death and resurrection Jesus quickly rebukes Peter, in front of the other disciples by calling him Satan (what’s up with that) but challenging the way he was thinking. Mark gives this account of Jesus and Peter because he wants the readers to know that we can get off track if we allow our human thinking to define our walk with Jesus. It also shows us something even more profound about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. It’s about laying down our lives in order to find our lives.

We often see the disciples as those that got Jesus right away, the truth is, they often misunderstood who he was. They’ve just witnessed the feeding of the 5000 and now out on the water, with a head wind, Jesus walks towards them and they think he’s a ghost. Jesus' intent to walk by is not about ignoring their situation, it’s about the intent to reveal who he is. He responds with, it is I. We might think we get Jesus but really, it’s the progression of each encounter getting to know more of who he is.
