  • Ep. 043 - Destroyer (2018)
Karyn Kusama has destroyed a lot of expectations throughout her filmography. One of which is the expectation that she is a one-note, predictable filmmaker. Destroyer is a good example of that. Coming from a neo-suspense-horror-drama-whatever else you want to label a neatly constructed film that cannot be finitely labeled like The Invitation, Destroyer is a doubling - or quintupling - down of one of Kusama most recognizable themes to her work: Empathy. Join Jason and Paco as they explore the fractured story structure of a film like Destroyer, while allowing some peace with the overall technical skill and acting bravado on display. Suffice to say: we want to love this movie, but...

  • Ep. 042 - The Invitation (2015)
The Invitation confronts grief, redemption, religious/cultist ideals, all while challenging the viewer’s expectations of what to believe as well as who to trust.
Join Jason, Paco and Evan as they discuss Karyn Kusama’s, up to this point, penultimate (Evan uses that word a lot in this episode) film. That sentence was melee-mouthed, but so is the discussion and our resident cinephiles’ interpretation of objectively one of the most tense and nuanced horror-thrillers to have come out in the last decade.
Also, the art of the Irish Goodbye is discussed, as well as the reasons why your Irish Goodbye at a party may not have been as smooth as you hoped for. AND our segment Saving Face gets its own little theme song face-lift....so....be gentle.

  • Ep. 041 - Jennifer's Body (2009)
For a bad movie that is trying to be reclaimed, does Jennifer’s Body really hold true to its conceit to merit a reclamation by the audience it is ultimately written for? Yes and no. We may not be the right folks to talk about Jennifer’s Body, but we definitely try. Join Jason and Paco as they grapple with the ideas and themes of Jennifer’s Body. Some close-reading comes into play. Vindication is struggled with. Disdain for emo-rock is abound. And it all ultimately comes down to....you’ll just have to listen to find out.

  • Ep. 040 - Aeon Flux (2005)
Okay. This movie....my lord this movie....okay it’s bad, but...it’s kind of fun. Whaddaya want?? Look, it’s better than The Island, we can at least say that. Also, Karyn Kusama and her team did have some VERY different ideas about where they wanted to take this movie, but....ya know....Hollywood. Anyway, enough said. I’ll let ya get to it yourself.

  • Ep. 039 - Girlfight (2000)
Vulgar Auteurs is back with our latest series on the films of Karyn Kusama. And, guurrl, is Kusama off to a good start. The fellas talk about the struggles of blending a boxing story with the pathos of growing up as a troubled teen, as well as how Kusama drew a lot from her personal connections to implement into the story. Also discussed: how to shoot impactful fight scenes on a budget, gender constructs, Michelle Rodriquez killing it in her first ever on-screen performance, whether or not Harvey Feirstein gets confused with Harvey Weinstein, and how love stories sometimes work and sometimes get in the way of the overall subject matter. Also, where the hell is Diana in the last scene? What ever became of her and her dad? Does that even matter? Tune in to find out whether we care or not about that.

  • Counterprogrammers - Raised by Wolves - Ep. 01

Welcome to the Counterprogrammers’ newest series on the latest Ridley Scott driven sci-fi television show, Raised by Wolves. Androids raising children? Wacky! Religious-based turmoil?? Get outta here. Paco and Jason are helming a journey into one of the most unique exhibitions of the human condition that television has taken in the last....okay, year or so. There have been a lot of great existential expeditions in the past few years, but this one is pretty stellar. Join the fellas as they discuss the nuances with which Raised by Wolves explores both parenthood and social instability within just the FIRST EPISODE. It’s the kind of ride that not even Richard Branson could promise, like, 10 years ago.
