  • Counterprogrammers - Gangs of London - Season 1 Finale (Wrap-up)

Sorry for the delay, folks! Our Gangs of London wrap-up is here! What made GoL so great? Where did it fall short? And what can we expect from a season two? Does it even need a season two? Well....that’s ultimately up to the execs, but Jason and Paco certainly have their thoughts, and we all thank you for joining us in reeling with these thoughts.

We also are excited to announce the new series we’re going to be covering in our next foray into the world of television. Stay tuned!

  • First Annual Vulgars (Part 2)
Welcome back to the First Annual Vulgars! We are covering a lot of ground in this one. From directors we’ve been following, to the film and television discoveries we made in 2020, to the myriad of documentaries that came out in 2020, to the genre filmmaking that stood out to us, to our top five picks of the year, and ultimately rounding it out with the films we will be looking forward to in the year to come...or at least what is coming whether we like it or not.
Thank you all for joining us through the tumultuous journey that was the year of 2020, and for sticking with our silly, tangent-loving bee-hinds. We could not have made it this far, and with spirits high enough to continue on without y’all. We love you...there I said it. Go hug yourself.

  • First Annual Vulgars (Part 1)
Welcome to our first annual Vulgars! In the first part of our two part deep-dive we delve into the films and television, and in particular the stellar performances and stand-out scenes that graced the screen in the tumultuous year of 2020. For as difficult and heartbreaking as the year 2020 was, it was art and entertainment that ultimately kept those lucky few of us upright and able to keep on chooglin'. This time we open up to provide the good vibes and recommendations that we hope will help you, our beloved listeners, find some solace in a world torn asunder.
We love you all so much for sticking with us and for showing your support. We wouldn't have survived without you. And it goes without saying that none of us can truly survive without the help of those around us, and especially those deeply connected to us.

  • Ep. 038 - Fuqua in Review
The time has come, folks. Jason, Paco and Evan dive deep into the workings of Antoine Fuqua, both as a filmmaker, and as a GENRE filmmaker that has been underrated in his endeavors to create the kinds of films that aren’t really made this day and age. We also underline the critical adversities that Fuqua has endured while still thriving within the system. If anything, Fuqua is one of those contemporary filmmakers that is always willing to walk through new avenues in order to make a compelling narrative, while unabashedly kicking up the action to wow his audience, even when he is thwarted by the Hollywood system (or known dick head, Bruce Willis) at numerous turns. In addition, we introduce who we will be covering in our next season of Vulgar Auteurs, so stay tuned for that!

  • Counterprogrammers - Gangs of London - Ep. 09 (Episode 8)
In the penultimate episode of the season, every player is at play. Sean, Elliot, Billy, Lale, Luan, Jevan, the whole gamut is setting the table for what could be the greatest payoff that we could imagine in a television series. Paco and Jason give a shoutout to the production company for the stellar work that they have put into a TV series up to this point, as well as the structure and grace with which the storytellers breathe life, nuance and revelation into characters that we have come to love, hate and ultimately sympathize with throughout the rollercoaster that is Gangs of London. Also, we get a quick deep dive into The Paco Story: A Shitty Tale of Love and Bathroom Dating. We await your hate mail and love letters. Enjoy.

  • Ep. 037 - The Equalizer 2 (2018)

Jason and Paco are back this week to discuss Fuqua’s most recent film, and (for now) the final film in our Fuqua series, as well as his latest installment in the Equalizer universe, The Equalizer 2. This movie is also Denzel Washington’s only sequel in his entire career. Not because he didn’t want one, but apparently he hasn’t really been offered one. I’d watch Man on Fire 2. Or, Men on Fire? Maybe. Also, we’ll definitely give Denzel 5 stars for acting. As a Lyft driver...maybe 3? Don’t get us wrong, he’s a great driver, but not the one you might want if you’re going to commit a crime and hope it gets swept under the rug...I’m not saying...like.....we’re not condoning......oh boy.

  • Counterprogrammers - Gangs of London - Ep. 08 (Episode 7)
After everything we’ve been through, Jason and Paco talk about episode 8 (or 7) being a great example of ramping up to what we hope to be a huge payoff in the episodes to come. The Wallaces and the Dumanis face what was inevitable between them, Lale struggles to find her footing once again, and Luan is faced with a dilemma only he can solve at this point, alone. Talk about place setting.

  • Ep. 036 - The Magnificent Seven (2016)
The fellas ride into the stable to talk Fuqua’s remake of The Magnificent 7. Spoilers: Fuqua never screened the original for his cast before filming; this is more closely related to the source material, Seven Samurai (which Fuqua DID screen for his cast). Paco, Jason and Evan talk the nuances of both the original 1960 film and the remake made 56 years later, as well as the development of the Western genre as a whole and where it has come since the days of Sergio Leone, John Ford and Sam Peckinpah. Also, spoiler alert: this movie is very different from the original.

  • Counterprogrammers - Gangs of London - Ep. 07 (Episode 6)
Merry Friedkin Christmas...Eve, folks! *Queue “Only You” by The Platters - Jason and Paco are here to reveal their Google histories, as well as discuss the pitfalls of a broken crime family and what that might mean for Gangs of London yet to come. Broken families, broken glass, broken spirits, it’s all covered from head to toe in this week’s episode.
