  • Ep. 035 - Southpaw (2015)
You know how Fuqua likes to fit a little pathos and emotional weight to his action films? Think of that, but instead he’s given the opportunity to fit a little action into an emotionally heavy film. Everyone deserves a classic boxing movie role, and this is Jake Gyllenhaal’s. It’s not so much Gyllenhaal’s southpaw (metaphor intended), as it is his foray into showcasing his brilliance in a movie that arguably stands strong against 2015’s favorite boxing flick, Creed. Also, this movie has the best child-acting since Michael B. Jordan in season one of The Wire. Shoutout to Oona Laurence for killing it. Also, screenwriting...this movie has it......yeah....it’s got it....soooo.....enjoy. PSA: There is an announcement at the end of the episode about the content that is slated to be released in the coming weeks, so look out for that.

  • Ep. 034 - The Equalizer (2014)

Not since Training Day have we all been on the same page about how awesome a Fuqua movie is...Maybe Shooter. But...producer Evan still hasn’t seen that one...the bum. Anyway, I hope you’re ready for a summary-deficient analysis, because the fellas get right down to the nitty gritty of what makes this revenge flick so entertaining as well as being a Fuqua throwback to the classic revenge flick of the '70s and '80s, while also being very of its time stylistically. Fuqua has definitely grown. However, let’s not skirt the real reason why we love this movie, and what ultimately makes it actually work: Denzel mother-effing Washington. The Snake Charmer himself. The Man of Every Hour. The Wolf in its Own Clothing. The Clock in Your Proverbial Tower. The Yin AND the Yang. The Banana Slices in Your Bowl of Cheerios....that one’s a bit personal, but you get the idea.

  • Counterprogrammers - Gangs of London - Ep. 05 (Episode 4)
Do you like disfunctional families? Is your family also part of a crime syndicate? No? We know you’re lying. But that’s okay. We don’t need to know the details. In fact, please don’t tell us. It’s best we not know. Anyway, during the most tumultuous period of the year for all families, especially during Covid, in this week’s episode we are taking a deep dive into the Wallaces and the disfunction behind their family unit, as well as the adversities that are to come for all of them in one of Gangs of London’s most riveting and personal episodes to date.

  • Ep. 033 - Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
This is...top 3? Secret Service movies of all time....speculating here. Haven't seen them all, but this one's up there. Is this unadulterated American propaganda, or is Fuqua taking pot-shots at the brouhaha that erupts at the very thought of America taking on a country that would DARE attack us? Whoa, bro! What?? You wanna go? I can do more pushups than you, man! I can take you to Poundtown any day of the week, brah!
Phew, sorry. Lost myself for a second. But seriously, there might be a little more to the purpose of Olympus Has Fallen than simply meets the eye. Take the tour with us as Jason, Paco and returning nuisance producer Evan discuss the ridiculous and the radical, the patronizing and the patriotic.

  • Ep. 032 - Brooklyn's Finest (2009)

We’re doing some close reading on this week’s deep-dive into Training Day’s spiritual sequel, Brooklyn’s Finest...but you knew that.....it’s in the title of the episode....just wanted to freshin’ yer memor-ah nevermind. Join the fellas as they share perspectives on the world of crime, representation and some Al Swearengen level mischief from Richard Gere.

  • Ep. 031 - Shooter (2007)

In any other scenario a movie like Shooter could have gone all sorts of wrong, but in Antoine Fuqua's deft hands it ends up being an homage to the classic '70s action-thrillers that many directors to this day pull inspiration from. Fuqua proves his love for directors like Sergio Leone and Kurosawa in this (Paco-term) "dumb-guy movie" way that surprises and delights our hosts (and hopefully our listeners) to no end. We also can't seem to get away from Mark Wahlberg, so we might as well just take it on the chin and enjoy the inevitability that Marky Mark is going to be the star in some of our favorite movies whether we expect it or not.

Also, Levon Helm from The Band...LEVON FUCKING HELM...from...THE BAND is in this movie!! Like...and he's GOOD. What the....that's....that's just got to be noted. The HELMs Deep himself. The We Shall Be uh LEVON in all his glory. Any fans of The Band out there? The Weight? Up On Cripple Creek? Music from the Big Pink?? Cahoots?? Moondog Matinee...anyone?? Sorry...just gotta get that out. Like......so random, and so awesome at the same time.
