Day 76 - I knew I would be having maybe a week off, which turned into three weeks. First week isolation and then the next two recovering. I did wonder whether to miss recording these days in between the walking. ‘The not walking days’ and the thing that made me decide to write something, no matter how little was that the clock for the walking challenge hasn’t stopped, it’s still ticking. These walking days are still happening, whether I’m walking or not. Hence the reason to type something acknowledging each day whether walked or not.

Day 75 – I asked Dave to work from home today, the day after the operation, just in case. Actually, he’s been very good has taken everything on, and is doing everything. Me, I’m uncomfortable and sore, so not in a great state. I spend most of the day in bed recovering, zoning in and out of the here and now. Having some pretty weird dreams too, if only I could remember them. Do you remember your dreams? When you’ve had a good one, it’s almost like a good story and yet you can see them but they begin to fade. That good story doesn’t even stay, I suppose that’s why some people sleep with pen and paper by the bed.

Dave’s last day of working from home, he’s been a right trooper, bless him. He’s put the saloon back to the way it’s meant to be, in that he’s pulled the sofa bed down from sitting on its side. He’s taken his rather massive monitor and office chair back to work and now we can be a boat again.

Day 74 – Surprisingly I slept last night, didn’t think I would, but did. Up and out early heading to Nottingham for my operation. It’s only day surgery so hopefully, without complications, I’ll be out on the same day. This was the reason we only had to shield for a week. If it had been an overnight stay then shielding is two weeks. No!! I don’t know why. Slightly weird but in our case quite lucky.

Needless to say, no walking apart from walking to the Treatment Centre and then from my cubicle to the theatre room. You’re not allowed to wear jewellery or watches anyway, unsure how far but I bet it was less than half a mile. I certainly wasn’t walking afterwards and went back to bed when we got home. Nice to be back.

Day 73 - The day before the operation, I’m slightly anxious.  Still shielding but I feel so guilty. The girls are not really being walked. We get them out when we can, we try to sneak out at night when foot flow on the towpath is at its minimum, but still, it just doesn’t seem enough. I know dogs are pretty adaptable but the reason I don’t work is so I can look after the dogs walking etc, whilst living in a tiny off-grid home. That was the compromise. The girls just want to go out, play, and investigate and this shielding is rubbish for them. Better times will come but for the time being, these times are rubbish.

The problem with Dave working from home, yes, I know he doesn’t like it but needs must and all that. As I was saying the problem with Dave working from home is when he’s on a phone call I can hear him. He’s working down one end of the boat and I continue to work at the other end, doing audio work for podcast, so whilst I might be talking about Willow trotting along there is an undercurrent sound of Dave explaining if they remove that bit and use magnets in this manner than that machine would do this that and the other. Okay fair enough the last sentence does read like gobbledygook but that is in fact what it sounds like to me. I really don’t know what Dave talks about and I daren't ask what he does. Oh, you want to know what he does? Well … erm a design engineer thingy working with magnetics. Unless you’re an engineer probably best not to ask, like me. We all have our specialties and Dave’s is engineer talk and DIY he’s good at DIY too.

Day 72 - Dave’s second day of working from home, the narrowboat. He says he doesn’t like working on the boat because he feels isolated. Honey, I’m on the boat on my own for most of the time! Guess he likes to get out there and interact with others, particularly those of an engineering persuasion. I guess I’m used to being on my own, and are very much able to self-entertain I can safely say even though I do not work, I bring no income into our home, I am always busy and I’d even go as far as to say I do not have enough time.

Currently busy doing mine and Willows Podcast, she talks and everything. Call me Doctor Dolittle if you like. Up and running on wherever you listen to Podcasts. Or maybe you’re listening to me now, talking about podcasts and listening to the podcast. Could get into some sort of time - time vortex with this one so I’ll bob down the full stop and call it a day.

Day 71 – The boat is in uproar, Dave is working officially from home now, you know, home is tiny so where are we supposed to put a desk?

No, we chose not to have a dinette when we made the boat so that’s not an option. Perhaps in hindsight, we should have, but you don’t really miss what we’ve never had. Also, I think until you’ve lived in an area, place, home, you don’t figure out what is and isn’t working. For example; We really struggled with the lack of storage in the bedroom – wardrobes, and drawers. This bedroom/the sitting area is where we spend most of our time, especially now during lockdown, especially now during shielding.

We’ve always put our bed away (sofa bed) daily because it gives us and the girls more living room. So, they can have the salon at the other end of the boat, but what happens is the dogs want to be with us – yes, I know that’s nice so we generally are all in one room.

Decision made, we’ll put a desk in the saloon. We’ve had to upend the other sofa bed but we’ve squeezed him in.

Day 70 - A kind of subdued day today, Dave wanted to DIY. Couldn’t go out and get the right stuff as we’re shielding. By default, I put that those idle hands to good use. Got me a little helper on the digital side of things. I wouldn’t say Dave a natural IT Guy but he muddled along, alright, s’pose.

The dogs seemed to know we were busy so stayed out of our way and running in their dreams. It’s difficult for them this restriction of exercise. They still go out briefly but it’s not working well. A nightly plan is hatched. If we as a whole can’t go where there are people and let face it a nice day and a Sunday there will be hoards. We will go when everyone has gone home.

Setting off like thieves in the night, we tiptoed off the pontoon and up the path. Well, when I say tiptoe, Willow was just barging us lesser sure-footed twinkle toes out the way, in an effort to be in the lead. Clearly no scary monsters out tonight.

These dogs have the energy to spend and spend it they did. I fear we may pay the price for such frolicking. Willow because of her sore neck, she’s meant to be on reduce exercise anyway, and Eva because those weary old bones just don’t move the way they used to. It was needed, they blew off so much steam, so much pent-up energy. Now Dave may deny it but I’m pretty sure I saw blue sparks flying off them, if only we could harness that energy and hook it/them up to the batteries. Everyone loves free electric

Day 69 - Walking is closed as we officially head into completely avoiding people. Today I would suggest was not a success.

The dogs are suffering. If a bimble is a short walk, a bob out is defiantly not enough. We have dogs like champagne, in the fact that they are ready to pop. They are completely pent up. Today highlights the benefits of regular walks, not only to exercise your dog but to stimulate them as well. When we decided to make our leisure boat our home, we made the decision that the dogs would be my job. Willow is springing off the walls and twice managed to bounce on my foot.

Shielding is hard, especially in such a small area – 50 foot by 6 and a bit. I think we would have managed better if we were out on the cut. Then we have the option of mooring remotely and not bumping into our marina neighbours, who now just think we must be rude. One knocked on the boat and asked to borrow the block key. Guess he didn’t know – I left Dave to deal with that.

Day 68 - SSDD (Stephen King) Same Day as yesterday, avoiding people and diving in hedgerows. A brief glimpse of the sky and then back into my burrow. It appears that I am destined to stay down this rabbit hole. Rather than keep typing about nothing I’ve asked Lisa to keep the group active, after all, she has a marathon to train for. Care to share your training plans? Me, I’m avoiding people and picking up poop, it ain’t the high life and I greatly look forward to the release of the 12th April. Dave has just pooped on my sandcastle, apparently, that’s local journeys only so how does that translates to boat crossing shire borders I don’t know. Go on Dave just kick my sandcastle over, why don’t you.

I’ll be stepping back as I won’t be doing much if any walking but I will keep bobbing in and spurring you all on. Watching your dust disappear in the distance, whilst I sit on my toadstool outside my burrow waiting. It’s beginning to sound a bit like Wind in the Willow (see what I did there) ha ha ha Windy Willow!! Never mind, I’ll carry on waiting for Ratty to pass, but don’t mention it to Willow, you know what she’s like with rats.

Day 67 – When someone says you shouldn’t go out, can’t go out then clearly that’s the time you want to go out. I do need to go out; I sneak the dogs out but I’m jumping out the way of people, waiting on the other side of the locks, like a cat burglar. Dogs need to be walked, there has never been a time where I could have a day off. Even when I’ve been the walking dead (poorly sick) those dogs still need to go out. It’s not like we have a garden just to bob them in. That was the calling of boat life and Giant Breeds. That’s why I stay home, that’s the comprise. Can you imagine the energy levels of these puppies if they didn’t get exercised and stimulated? Doesn’t bear thinking about.

I finally managed to get a date to get my Rona Jab but can’t have that due to this Day Surgery I’m signed up to, yet again another compromise, wonder if they will give me it in the hospital like an overall care package.

Shielding isn’t great fun and because we live on a boat and there is pretty much no way, we could live separately so Dave is having to Shield to. If you see us, avoid us.
