Joining me this week for a special bonus episode is Michelle Kennedy, the Founder of one of the fastest-growing social networking apps for women, Peanut. Before creating Peanut, Michelle was a corporate lawyer. She then became the Deputy CEO of the dating app Badoo and a director at Bumble.

In today’s episode, Michelle gets candid about the reality of building a successful business with a toddler and baby on the way. She shares what it’s really like to raise investment while pregnant and the sacrifices she had to make with friends and family to build Peanut up to what it is today. Michelle also shares the one thing that helped her maintain her passion and motivation.

Now let’s talk about my first guest. Where do I even begin with this, babe?! Candice Brathwaite is a Sunday Times Bestselling author, journalist, TV presenter, and founder of Make Motherhood Diverse. Candice started her blogging career in 2016 and has turned her online presence into a very lucrative career. Her book I Am Not Your Baby Mother was a groundbreaking expose of the disparity black women face while pregnant in the UK healthcare system.

Candice is known to keep it 100 with you, and she didn’t disappoint in today’s episode. Candice reveals why she chose a career online as a blogger and influencer. She shares how she’s able to write a book a year. You’ll learn how she protects her energy and attracts many lucrative opportunities and so much more. Let’s get into it.

I‘ve been following Jamz for a few years now, and I’ve had the pleasure of watching her evolve and elevate her career in many different ways. Jamz Supernova made her name on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Radio 6 music. Jamz is also a presenter, label head, journalist, podcast host and A&R scout.

Today’s guest is Zeba Blay is a film and culture critic whose writing has been featured in The New York Times, Essence, Film Quarterly and The Village Voice to name a few. Zeba has spent her nearly decade-long career writing about pop culture at the intersection of race, gender, and identity; being one of the first people to coin the term #CarefreeBlackGirls on Twitter in 2013 to create a space to celebrate black womanhood online.

In today’s interview Zeba and I talk about the challenges of finding your voice as a writer and we explore what it might mean if you don’t find your voice. We talk about working through your fears and getting comfortable and uncomfortable with therapy. We also talk about what it means to be a Carefree Black Girl

I don’t know if you noticed but i was 100% having a moment because Zeba’s podcast was literally one of the first 5 podcasts i ever listened to and made me feel like I could take up space in the world. Today’s guest is writer, stylist and consultant Aja Barber whose work deals with the intersections of sustainability and the fashion landscape.  Aja has amassed a platform of over 200k Instagram followers who look to her for insights, education and knowledge on what’s happening in the world of sustainable fashion and consumerism. Aja’s work builds heavily on ideas behind privilege, wealth inequality, racism, feminism, colonialism and how to fix the fashion industry with all these things in mind.  

In today’s interview Aja shares what it’s really like to grow your platform and the pitfalls that come with sudden growth. Aja reveals what it takes to take down fast fashion and what you need to do to be on the right side of history. We also get into the intersections of fast fashion, from colonialism, climate change and Consumerism.

Wheeew we got deep and this was not an easy edit let me tell you so Let’s get into it!

Today’s guest is Alayo Akinkugbe who is the Founder and Mastermind of @ABlackHistoryOfArt on Instagram which she founded in February 2020. Alayo is an Art History graduate from Cambrisge University and is studying her MA in Curating at Courtald. Through @ABlackHistoryOfArt Alayo highlights overlooked black artists, sitters, curators and thinkers from art history and the present day. As of recording the platform has over 50,000 Followers.

In today’s interview Alayo shares what she loves about Art History and how she was able to carve out a lane in space that traditionally excludes Black art and history. We explore what success looks like in Art history and how that’s reflected in her career. We also dive deeper into some of the barriers to entry in Art and Art history and how you can overcome them.

Alayo is levels! I loved this conversation it was refreshing to hear her passion and joy about the lane she occupies in Art history right now! It’s inspiring to see too!  Today’s guest is Fiona Compton a Historian, Filmmaker and visual Artists. Fiona is also the Founder of the incredibly popular Instagram Page, Know Your Caribbean a platform dedicated to the enrichment of the history and culture of the Caribbean. Fiona is also a podcast host and you can hear her on the Relateable podcast a safe space for Black People and she recently launched the Know Your Caribbean podcast for people that wanted to dive deeper into some of the stories and histories she shares on Instagram

In today’s interview Fiona and I talk about the desire to leave your mark in the creative industries, we talk about owning the title of Historian and reframing history without the white gaze. We also talk about some of financial and emotional barriers and obstacles to that come with sharing Black and Caribbean history.

Something that really sat with me after this interview was the importance of finding and confidently owning your voice. I really loved what Fiona had to say about reframing the sources and looking at what was being described and reimagining that without a white or Christian lens. Powerful stuff. Today’s guest is the self-proclaimed Gen-Z historian Kahlil Greene. Kahlil Greene is an online educator with ~500,000 followers across TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn platforms! He was recently profiled in The New York Times for his digital education work.

In addition to being a viral historical communicator, Kahlil is currently studying the History of Social Change at Yale University. Where he was elected the first Black student body president in Yale's 318-year history at just 19 years old.

In today’s interview, Kahlil and I talk openly about the importance of sharing Black History across different cultures and geographies. Kahlil reveals how his experience in education has enabled him to develop his unique teaching style. And he shares how he’s able to look past the traumas and keep spreading the word about our history.
