When Jada Yuan was chosen to be the New York Times' 52 Places Traveler she was shocked and excited. I mean, who wouldn't be?! The chosen traveller would get to visit 52 places on the paper's Best Places to Travel in 2018 list in one year. There would be a lot of eating, a lot of adventure and a lot of alone time--after all, she'd be travelling by herself.

Jada is back from her whirlwind journey around the globe and she's had some time to reflect on everything she saw. She's also become a bonafide expert on travelling solo. This week Mo asks her to break down the logistics of solo travel and share some of her favourite stories from the year abroad.

Finding delicious local cuisine in an unfamiliar place can be daunting. Sure, there are lists of restaurants with hundreds of reviews and articles outlining the best places to dine, but there's always an abundance of choice. And how do you know which ones are authentic? After all, food is a gateway to the culture of a place, so you want restaurants to reflect that.

Our guest this week is Suresh Doss, a food journalist who always travels with an appetite for local cuisine. Over the years he has perfected his strategy for eating like a foodie while abroad and in this episode, he shares that plan with Mo.

How to travel like a foodie

Between school, play dates and extracurricular activities, kids' schedules are quite regimented, which can be stressful for our little humans. On one hand, it's good for them to have busy schedules. On the other, does all that routine give them enough time to just be, well, kids? This week's guest didn't think so. To free her family from their routine, she decided to take them on a trip around the world. What she found along the way changed their family forever.

When Canada gets cold, Canadians tend to prefer places where the sun shines and the air doesn't hurt your face. Unfortunately, that desire for a winter escape usually means crossing the border. 

But what if everything you wanted out of a vacation was right here in your own country? What if we made an effort to visit the parts of our country we know nothing about? Our guest is something of an expert in that department. In 15 years Rick Mercer travelled to over 500 places in Canada for his show, The Rick Mercer Report, and he says we could all benefit from seeing more of our land.

Sometimes the best way to take in a city, region or even country is by driving through it. Other times, taking a road trip might be the cheapest way to get there. Whatever the reason, you buckle up, hunker down with your favourite snacks and take in everything the drive has to offer. Smelly bathrooms and all. 

But how do you decide between renting a car or taking your own? If you do rent, how do you get the most bang for your buck? What about extended journeys, should you get an RV? And how do you make the most of the route between destinations?
