This episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast is all about understanding depression in teens and young adults, and everything that you need to know as a parent if your child begins showing signs of depression. Our guest on today's episode is Dr. Michelle Bengtson, a board certified, clinical neuropsychologist for over 30 years. She sits down with Laine to discuss the many different ways depression can present itself in teens and young adults, and how parents can be properly equipped to help their children through the hardships of depression.

Dr. Michelle shares that depression is not a one-size fits all type of mental illness. There are many different ways that depression can manafest in teens and young adults, as well as create different behaviors, habits and emotions once they begin to experience depression. She emphasizes that parents should not be afraid to ask certain questions to their child, including "have you thought about harming yourself?", because it opens up a path for them to share what they are feeling. It is not your fault as a parent that your child struggles with depression, but it is your responsibility to get them the help they need.

Who is Dr. Michelle Bengtson?

Dr. Michelle Bengtson is a board certified clinical neuropsychologist with more than 20 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and mental disorders in children, adults, and seniors. Dr. Bengtson worked at several major medical centers prior to starting her private clinical practice in Southlake, Texas in the year 2000. She worked in rehabilitation, consultation and liason, hematology and oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry departments of both pediatric and general medical institutions. She worked extensively with patients suffering from chronic mental illness, traumatic brain injury, stroke, seizures, learning disabilities, attention and memory disorders, developmental disorders, and psychological difficulties. She loves offering practical resources to help her audience grow in your walk with the Lord.

Who is Susan Milligan?

Susan Milligan is a Counselor located in Little Rock, AR. Susan specializes in helping clients who have experienced trauma in their past. This trauma could have been a one-time event like an accident or a chronic series of events like abuse. This week's episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast is powerful because we have a testimony of overcoming sexual assault with award-winning, best selling author, Gigi Sabbat! Sexual assault is a topic that a lot of us don't like to talk about. However Gigi is here today to share her story of walking through sexual assault and how she was healed from that trauma and went on to "Walk With Purpose" in all aspects of her life.

Gigi shares her story of abuse at the age of 8, the devistating effect that it had on her life, and how she was able to begin the process of overcoming what she describes as a "heartblock". Gigi then speaks directly to other victims of abuse about what they can do to start healing, how to not fall victim to The Enemy's traps, and how they can move forward to live their life as God has called them to live it.

The statistics for sexual abuse and rape are absolutely sombering. An American is sexually assaulted every 93 seconds. And every 9 minutes, an American child is sexual abused. These numbers are truly horrifying and it leaves us with questions like "What can I do to help someone who has experienced sexual assault?" or "What do I need to know about sexual assaults to not allow my family members or friends to potentially become victims?" This is why I am so blessed to welcome Licensed Counselor Susan Milligan to the Warfare Parenting Podcast.

Susan Milligan discusses what sexual assault is, what age are individuals abused the most often, and how many different forms sexual assault can take on so we can be prepared as parents to protect our children. Susan then explains who these abusers are and how it is often someone who is close to the victim: a teacher, ex-spouse, or a religious figure. She breaks down how "grooming" is often a big part of manipulating victims into these situations and how the grooming leads to assault and rape.

However, Susan wants parents to know that we can't lose hope from these statistics, because there are so many resources available to both victims and their families to help them on the road to recovery.

How do you begin the process of recovery when you discover someone you love is self-harming? On this week's episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast, Dena Yohe returns to share with us the story of her daughter's recovery from self-harm and cutting, and how her recovery lead to the birth of the ministry To Write Love on Her Arms. Dena shares the story of how her daughter, Renee, began self-harm when she was just 12 years old, and how, over the course of years, that story of pain, depression and shame turned into a story of victory for Renee, Dena and their whole family.
