Washed Up Walkons

Today we are joined by Hawkeye Insider/247Sports reporter Elliot Clough, who shares his path from running track (including walking on at Iowa Central and UNI) and doing campus media to a grind through freelance writing, play-by-play, radio DJ work, and multiple layoffs before landing full-time at 247. They discuss balancing fandom and objectivity in sports media, then shift to Iowa football as fall camp begins: quarterback play, wide receiver improvements (including Tony Diaz), offensive line configuration questions (especially at center), portal impact players like Diaz, LJ Phillips, and Tyler Brown, and a hot take that Cam Buffington could become Iowa’s second-best defensive player. Elliot predicts Iowa's record relative to the 7.5 win total thrown out by sportsbooks with most of the prediction revolving around a brutal early Big Ten stretch (Michigan, Ohio State, Washington).

We open with summer banter before shifting to early-August football season buildup, including high school teams practicing in summer, Big Ten camp vibes, and betting futures on FanDuel. The hosts discuss how football training and athlete development have changed over decades, plus Iowa-related nostalgia and jokes about Nile Kinnick. They cover the Cy-Hawk rivalry being extended through 2031 while predicting its format may change as college football and media rights evolve, and they debate preserving traditions amid playoff expansion. Kluver recaps his CrossFit competition, finishing 12th of 30 in elite men with strong snatch and final-event performances. The episode also hits sponsors, the Iowa State Fair, the new “five-for-five” eligibility rule and its fallout, and the growing trend of corporate jersey patches and potential fits for Iowa.

For Ep 700 we welcome NFL quarterback, Iowa Legend, C.J. Beathard, who shares updates on life in Tennessee with his wife Maddie and kids, including a third child due in November. CJ is from Franklin, Tennessee and chose the Hawkeyes after flipping from Ole Miss. We reminisce about Iowa football, including playing through injuries, the 2015 season’s close-game success and leadership, the Big Ten Championship, the North Dakota State loss as a major “what if,” and memorable moments like the Indiana dive and Michigan helmet-storming theft story. Beathard discusses recruiting (Ole Miss to Iowa), his views on NIL and the transfer portal’s impact on team bonds, and his NFL experiences with the 49ers and Jaguars, including a nervous but meaningful 2020 start. He also tells draft-day stories about George Kittle, Tight End U’s growth, jersey swaps, and his love of golf and shark fishing.

On this episode of the podcast presented by FanDuel, Brad Heinrichs explains that The Swarm collective is shutting down because NIL rules changed last July, requiring deals over $600 to go through the NIL Go clearinghouse, creating long approval delays, reduced payouts, and eligibility risk if athletes are paid before approval. He outlines how Iowa’s $21M rev-share cap works, why above-the-cap money may increasingly flow through marketing arms like Learfield, and how Iowa’s Flight Funds differs by supporting under-the-cap payments with tax-deductible donations. The group discusses how individual NIL can still happen, with publicly traded companies like Apple bypassing NIL Go, and touches on Iowa’s quarterback battle and early betting lines, while reflecting on Swarm’s workload, recruiting pressures, and proposed fixes like multi-year player contracts.

The boys introduce Big Grove’s TigerHawk as the new Iowa beer sponsor, and then pivot into a rant about nonstop neighborhood fireworks disrupting sleep with young kids. The crew celebrates Team USA in the World Cup after Balogun’s red card is reversed and discusses the controversial call, upcoming match vs Belgium, and betting on FanDuel, plus broader patriotic unity. They dig into Drake’s diet, fasting, Fairlife milk habit, and training approach, then talk Iowa football summer conditioning, mental toughness, and practice demands. They recap the Savannah Bananas selling out Kinnick, featuring Brad Banks, Dallas Clark, and Spencer Lee, and share Tim Lester stories about recruits and Safety Zach Lutmer’s play recognition before closing with season outlook and World Cup futures.
