In this episode we dive into Iowa football news, including the Hawkeyes’ representatives for Big Ten Media Days in Chicago and new College Football ’27 player ratings featuring Pieper as the game’s top center. They discuss Bennett Stirtz being drafted 16th overall, compare NFL rookie signing bonuses to their own scholarship-check days, and plug early-season betting lines for Iowa’s opener and the Cy-Hawk game. The conversation shifts to whether Iowa should keep playing Iowa State annually, emphasizing tradition, adversity, and statewide importance. They preview sponsors and a forthcoming Iowa State Fair partnership, share fair “must-dos,” and close with thoughts on the new five-seasons-of-eligibility rule and a teased attempt to book CJ Beathard for episode 700.

On this episode of the podcast, we break down a rough 10-day illness and a frightening overnight breathing episode that nearly led to an ER visit. The show shifts to sports news, including Zach Johnson winning the Principal Charity Classic and a discussion of the rarity of golf’s Grand Slam. They briefly talk about the Knicks’ title drought, fan unrest, a Villanova-to-Knicks storyline, and World Cup chatter sparked by visitors reacting to Buc-ee’s and other American staples. The hosts preview FanDuel lines for Iowa football, debating big spreads vs Northern Illinois and Iowa State, roster inexperience, defensive questions, and a reportedly 50/50 QB battle. They then unpack the Brendan Sorsby/Texas Tech sports-betting controversy, contrasting it with Iowa/Iowa State gambling punishments and arguing college football’s rules are in a bad place, before closing with Iowa players doing paintball in Kinnick.

Kluver welcomes longtime Dowling Catholic head coach Tom Wilson for a throwback conversation that begins with memories from the 2013 Shrine Bowl, including intense practices and an opening deep ball to Matt Haack. Wilson reflects on notable athletes he has coached (Haack, John “Wiz” Wisniewski, Amarah Darboh, Rico Gafford, Jake Hummel, Ryan Boyle) and shares how he entered coaching, from early influences in Monroe to head coaching stops at English Valley and Wilton, a career-shaping graduate assistant stint at Ball State, eight years at Dike-New Hartford, and taking the Dowling job in 2005. He explains why he stayed in high school coaching despite college opportunities, emphasizing family timing, and discusses relationships with Kirk Ferentz and Reese Morgan. Wilson outlines his program-building values—hard work, accountability, relationships—plus feeder-system involvement, communication, expectations, and daily goal focus to combat complacency, along with traits he looks for in players and the benefits of multi-sport participation.

We catch up with former Hawkeyes Landan and Levi Paulsen in Kalona, Iowa, joking about local businesses, Amish country, and sponsorship dreams (including Kalona Supernatural Dairy). The conversation turns to post-football health, major weight loss, and a rundown of numerous surgeries—highlighted by Levi’s gruesome big-toe capsule tear story. Landan shares how jiu-jitsu (training at Citadel in Iowa City) became his new competitive outlet and Kevin joins to add his own Citadel injury story, while Levi explains his shift into endurance sports and training for a three-day gravel/swim/run event. They discuss fueling, the psychology of pursuing hard challenges after Iowa football, anxiety around fall camp, fatherhood updates, and how Landan and Levi helped grow an F3 men’s fitness/community group built on Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith.

The crew catches up on life updates—DFW golf events, BottleRock, Kevin’s Hawaii trip, and dad duties—before diving into sports. They discuss Colorado teams’ recent disappointments, Kluver’s upcoming CrossFit competition adding combine-style tests (40, 5-10-5, broad and vertical), and Iowa football kickoff times for UNI, Northern Illinois, Iowa State (a night Cy-Hawk game at Kinnick), and Nebraska (11 a.m. on Black Friday). They debate the proposed 24-team College Football Playoff and potential changes like eliminating conference championships, weigh how expansion affects regular-season meaning, and react to a new punt rule restricting motion and formations, including numbering-workaround details. The episode includes sponsor mentions (FanDuel, Grey’s Gourmet To Go, Illini Golf, Urology Center of Iowa) and previews upcoming summer episodes and guests.
