Washed Up Walkons

WashUp Walk-Ons opens with too-early college football national title odds and talk of potentially attending Iowa vs. Ohio State at Kinnick. The hosts recap the NFL Draft with a program-record seven Hawkeyes selected, discuss how an 8/9-win season can still produce that many draftees, and break down landing spots and storylines, including Logan Jones to the Bears and his “ketchup for life” perk, plus the ongoing Iowa-to-Steelers connection with multiple Hawkeyes on Pittsburgh’s depth chart. They also cover undrafted free agent signings, debate which UDFA has the best chance to stick in the league, touch on Broncos draft context and general draft fan culture, and share spring practice notes on Iowa’s QB battle, offensive optimism, and receiver room improvements. The episode ends with sponsor plugs, a brief Patriots media scandal aside, and plans for future guests and recaps.

Desmond is from Detroit, Michigan. He joined the Hawks as an under recruited athlete in the class of 2013, and it didn't take long for him to have a massive impact in Iowa City. He joins the podcast to talk about fatherhood, his under-recruited path to Iowa, and how he went from being offered as an athlete to becoming a standout defensive back and returner. He recalls early program memories, being thrown into action as a freshman, calling his first interception, and the instincts and preparation behind key plays. King reflects on Iowa’s 2015 season, including the Wisconsin win, the Michigan State loss, and the Rose Bowl defeat to Stanford, plus games that still haunt him. He explains sliding to the fifth round, his NFL rise to All-Pro honors, how a trade changed his view of the league as a business, and why he retired in December despite feeling he could still play. He also discusses his recovery habits, wrestling background, and his new coaching role with Saline High School in Michigan.

Grant and Tyler turn the April 16 “taglines” into the main Washed up Walk Ons show after recording a late-night guest episode, then bounce through topics including Tyler jokingly promoting his own sponsor, Patreon/Discord perks, and a spring merch sale with discounted tees and upcoming restocks. They briefly discuss Rory practicing at Augusta, Grant’s merch-buying habit and a lost Max Welling jersey order, the status-symbol culture of golf polos, and a hypothetical about eating 360 Oreos in 24 hours for $100 million. They touch on recent Iowa basketball content with Zach Schneider, NBA updates for former Hawkeyes (Garza and Peyton Sanford), WNBA expansion and Meghan Gustafson’s Portland Fire deal, and finish on Iowa football’s transfer-portal “no contact” sanctions and the futility of vacated wins, before teasing a Desmond King episode coming Monday.

Today on the podcast, we welcome back Zach Schneider, a former Northwest Missouri State player and longtime assistant/associate head coach under Ben McCollum, to discuss McCollum’s first season at Iowa and the program’s rapid rise from regular-season inconsistency to an Elite Eight run highlighted by beating Florida and rival Nebraska. Schneider recaps his background, explains McCollum’s recruiting approach, emotional intelligence, culture-building, and practice consistency, and argues those factors drive winning more than Xs and Os. The group evaluates Iowa’s roster fit for McCollum’s system, emphasizing the need for an impact true center and a playmaking guard to replace Bennett Stirtz, while noting key returners and young wings like Tate Sage, and Cooper Koch. They also discuss NIL/“payroll,” rotation preferences, Big Ten size/physicality matchups, and realistic expectations going forward.

In this Friendship podcast episode, Kluv welcomes Drake and GB Bone, open with jokes about Tiger Woods’ crashes and Masters week, and discuss an AI-edited Masters Champions Dinner image, the tradition itself, and the note that the reigning champion pays the tab. They react to Rory McIlroy’s commissioned Masters drawing and criticize his personality, then recap March Madness, including a Duke endgame meltdown, an Iowa highlight in One Shining Moment, and Michigan winning the national title. The conversation shifts to swim technique advice for an upcoming CrossFit event, brief Masters betting odds via FanDuel, an Iowa football big-hit clip, and the optics of the Diana Russini–Mike Vrabel pool photo. They then criticize NIL plus the transfer portal and note Iowa women’s losses and Iowa men’s surge under Ben McCollum, before ending with a story about a 6’9" Texas lefty throwing 100 mph and teasing a next episode with Zach Schneider.

TJ is from Fresno, California. He joined in the Spring semester of 2021 in Iowa City, and in this episode he discusses training for pro day in Austin and returning to Iowa after the combine, adjusting to being between teams, and learning the NIL/agent process, including how revenue sharing felt compared to scholarship checks. He reflects on growing up in Fresno, playing baseball and basketball before focusing on football, and the culture and weather shock of arriving in Iowa in January. Hall recounts his unusual recruiting path from Arizona to Washington (including a coaching staff firing during his visit) to Iowa, plus the influence of his family’s Midwest ties. He shares early trial-by-fire playing time, Coach Parker coaching stories, a turf toe injury, becoming a starter through extra work, handling social media criticism, favorite moments, and his emotions and excitement heading toward the April draft.

On this episode Iowa Hawkeyes football player Jeremiah Pittman returns to discuss balancing football with academics, choosing finance over engineering, and what he gained from demanding coursework like valuation modeling. He reflects on growing up in a strict household with two older brothers, a church-centered upbringing with music, and how maturity shaped his approach to college. Pittman details committing to Iowa during the COVID recruiting era without an official visit, drawn by transparent coaching (especially Coach Bell), program stability under Kirk Ferentz, and faith connections through Jim Goodrich and Athletes in Action. He explains how NIL, transfers, and revenue sharing changed college football, raising concerns about young players’ money habits. Pittman shares a significant knee cartilage injury and rehab, faith-based identity beyond sport, leadership in Bible studies, and what he’ll carry forward—time management and the “Iowa Edge.” He previews his post-football plans: a corporate finance rotational program at Uline, marriage, and house hunting.
