On our first episode of Academy Award nominees for Best Picture, we talk about the new movie Nomadland. A poetic, passionate, and beautiful film that goes into full depth of the Nomad lifestyle. We also talk about how we feel about Chloe Zhao winning the Best Director at the Golden Globes (FIRST Asian director to win & SECOND woman to win this reward). We also discuss how we feel about Nomadland’s chances of winning Best Picture & if we ever in our lives, would adopt this lifestyle.

Saint Maud is A24’s newest horror film, originally supposed to come out in 2019-2020, Saint Maud is a victim of those disasterly pandemic delays, which affected its hype & expectations for the both of us personally. Even with those delays, Saint Maud is a promising debut film from Rose Glass. A fantastic character study that had us at the edge of our seat.

On today’s episode we talk about the unique tale, Minari. Being a story about director’s Lee Isaac Chang’s childhood about his Korean family moving to Arkansas and trying to achieve the “American Dream”. A heart-warming, faithful, and compassionate film, Minari gives you a unique feeling of emotional investment throughout its runtime. We also talk about the asian representation and relatability we felt in the film and the importance of seeing those little things that we usually don’t see on the big screen. Minari is a fantastic film that everyone should experience.

Two fantastic actors at the helm, directed & written by an up-and-coming film director, a polarizing black & white setting, and filmed in an architectural stunning house, what could possibly go wrong? On our new episode of Quick Take, we talk about our 2021 year so far; the changes we made and the deteriorating state of our mental health in quarantine. A feminist revenge film about a woman that exposes predatory men and their “unknowing” predatory ways. A very unnerving, uncomfortable, but beautifully shot and even at times funny film. Pretty Young Woman’s genre transitions and tonal shifts are used at its advantage in keeping us interested as to what REALLY was going to happen next. We also talk about the lack of empathy that is shown in the film that reflects society & the “obvious bad” that isn’t so obvious to a lot of people in the real world.

From the same director of Happy Death Day, comes Christopher Landon’s newest horror film; Freaky. Freaky is a horror film that plays on the fun idea of body switching (ie. Freaky Friday), but mixing it with teen slasher horror tropes. With a great performance from Vince Vaughn and supporting cast as well, Freaky is a fantastic mix of comedy, horror, and teen-body-switching rolled up in one film.

On this episode, we surprisingly do our first horror film of the year, Possessor. From the son of famed director David Cronenberg, comes Brandon Cronenberg’s newest sci-fi horror film; Possessor. An incredibly jarring and trippy film, Possessor is a unique film with tons and tons of fun (but gross) set pieces and its use of body horror effectively carrying certain aspects of the film. We also get into the theories of the film, the idea of identity, and if we ever had the chance to choose someone to possess, who would we choose and why?

The first Studio Ghibli animated film ever made; Castle in the Sky is the second film from famed director Hayao Miyazaki, and Carmela’s favorite Studio Ghibli film. Come hangout as we journey to Laputa, Lost City of Atlantis, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon as we dive into the many different mythical places we’d like to visit in history. Along with that we talk about the future of Miyazaki’s films, his constant message of war and pollution that have been a recurring theme in his films.

On today’s episode we talk about the TikTok phenomenon; Ratatouille the Musical or Ratatousical as some would call it.We talk about this musical with special guest Sophia Fregoso. This musical was a CROWD FUNDED, CROWD MADE musical that grew into something even bigger. With actors like Wayne Brady & Adam Lambert ending up staring into the final version of this musical. A unique musical especially in the current climate and the way it was filmed, which is filmed primarily through TikTok and debuted online. A truly inspiring story, not only the musical, but the way this musical was made. Anyone can cook, anyone can create.
