Most of us have the opportunity, from time to time, to decide if we are going to help the less fortunate. We start hearing about people in need each year as we approach the holidays for sure. But, we also see the person or family humbled by tragedy—forced to beg publicly, having no other choice. They are now holding a tattered sign for help to survive. I will be the first to acknowledge that we never really know who is actually in need and who is just looking to get a few bucks without a hard day of work. This mystery of intention is where we need to reach out and build a relationship with people in our community. Regardless of someone else's intention, be it good or bad, God is looking at our choices through actions or inactions too. Remember, love believes the best in people (1 Corinthians 13:1ff), and yes, their motives become clear enough over time. But, the reality is that Jesus taught us we will always have the poor in our culture to help anytime we choose. (Matthew 14:7) So, why don't we? We have forgotten the great commandments to deeply and completely love God and selflessly love others. The kingdom of God is a love God, love others thing. When loving and helping those in need, we must remember that God has commanded it, justice and righteousness require it, and without question, love demands it. God is watching how we love those around us. He cares deeply about how we do it and will hold us accountable for what we do or don't do. (Romans 14:12)

Almost everyone in our western culture has been affected by divorce somehow. It can feel like divorce is everywhere, be it personally, someone in the family, a friend, or a co-worker. It has become endemic to our western culture. Yet, this is not God's intention. The Lord, from the beginning, made them man and female and brought them together to be as one flesh. (Genesis 1:27; 2:22–24) So Jesus taught clearly, "Therefore what God and joined together, let not man separate." (Mark 10:9) However, many have suffered the devastating consequences of divorce over the years. Marriage has become convenient, trite, or disposable. This attitude ought not to be. Marriage is to be enjoyed, not endured, so wisely consider what it means to enter into a lifelong covenant before God with another person, for the two become one inseparable flesh. Remember, brothers and sisters; marriage is an "until death do we part" commitment before our Almighty God, with few exceptions.

As much as material possessions can hinder a healthy, productive, and intimate relationship with God, our attitude can also be problematic if not kept in check. We can start thinking about how important we are, how we are right "all the time," how the ministry or family will not make it without us, and we often look down on others in order to remain in our lofty delusion. We turn up our nose at any simple correction and consider everyone else beneath our superior knowledge, learning, and experience. When challenged in the smallest way, we can start to worry about what other people think about us, way more than what God does. To say the least, this is not good. As we feel our foundation of selfishness and pride start to crumble under the weight of truth, we often will seek to justify our poor behavior rather than simply acknowledging our faith and shortcomings with humility. Remember, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise. (Ps 51:17) God is pleased with our humility, not our need to be right all the time.

When we think of the story of Samson, oftentimes we picture a man of extraordinary physique; perhaps an Arnold Schwarzenegger-type of world-class body builder with a Clint Eastwood attitude. But we have to remember, the Philistines were bewildered by his astonishing feats of physical prowess. They wondered where this man got his overwhelming strength. The truth of the matter is, he was probably quite ordinary in appearance, with the exception of his strange hair… for he was a Nazarite; a separated one. And apparently, he liked to eat, and he seems to have had something of a sweet-tooth. He may actually have been a tad out of shape with a bit of a belly. And when it came to attitude, he wasn’t particularly macho because he needed his parents’ help to meet the girl on whom he had a crush. So, what was the secret to his strength? His strength came from the place ours does when it comes time to do spiritual exploits…

Detectives are able to link a series of crimes together and even identify criminal by identifying established patterns of behavior. The technical term is modus operandi. Modus operandi is a Latin term that means a method of operation or simply “MO.” The MO is used to define peculiar habits or patterns of behavior unique to a criminal. Some MOs are so unique, that just a quick look at the crime scene by a seasoned detective will reveal the identity of the culprit. Satan also has an established MO. In tempting humans to sin, he’s used the same modus operandi for thousands of years. Satan’s method of operation was revealed in the Garden of Eden in his initial contact with humanity. It began the Fall of Man.
