Matthew 2, Luke 2:21-38. After traveling many miles and months to worship the new-born king of the Jews, the Magi arrived in Jerusalem. Makes sense. Where else would you expect to find a king but in His capitol city? And what else would you expect at the birth of the new king but excitement and celebration?

But of course, these wise men from the east quickly discovered that nothing they expected was what they found. Nothing. The new-born king of the Jews – the Messiah – was not in the capitol city of the Jews. He was not wrapped in silk and satin, nursed and cared for by the best of the best. He was not celebrated, and the news they brought of His birth was not met with enthusiastic excitement. The birth of the Christ brought mayhem and trouble.

So it is today. When Christ is birthed in our hearts, not everyone is as excited as we are. And quite frankly, He may not be exactly what we expect, and we may find Him in ways and places we do not expect. Nonetheless, wise men (and women, and boys and girls) still seek Him and worship His majesty.

Luke 14:25-35. Many of us over the years have discovered, the hard way, I might add, that following Jesus comes at a cost. The worst part is that often we do not see it coming, and we are blindsided with crushing loss or difficulty, all simply because we choose to love Jesus over the things of this world. There are those out there who hate you and me simply because the name of Jesus is sweet to our lips and yet is unbearably bitter to their lost souls. They hate you in this life because they hate Him. (John 15:20) The reality of the hardships of following Jesus need not be hidden from the lost or those seeking Jesus. They should be proclaimed in the fullness of their truth so that those who are willing may choose to go deeper in a committed relationship with Jesus. Regardless of the cost to them. Others who are not ready to commit to Jesus then can go back home and not suffer the fate of the faithful. The ignorant will often give up in the day of difficulty, pain, sorrow, and persecution. But for the faithful follower of the King of kings knows that coming into the kingdom of God comes with hardships. We know about it upfront because Jesus tells us about them in His rich love for us. We are not necessarily ready for dark days and the valley of death from the get-go, But God, in His great love, will not forsake us and will get us through the darkened night and deepest valleys in order to the great dawn of His glorious purpose and hope. (Philippians 1:6)

Luke 14:12-24. Why are you waiting to get honest with God? Are you too busy, stubborn, self-centered, or are you too lazy to change? The reality is that God is calling us to a life full of joy, love, and relationship with Himself. So what are we waiting for, an invitation? You have one! God is calling you. Do you think we are too dirty or broken for the Almighty God? That kind of thinking is not valid. God sees you in your brokenness. He sees and knows everything about you and calls to you to come to Him in full knowledge of all your baggage. The lover of your soul is calling to you. Will you come? Will you be healed? Will you become whole? Jesus is waiting for you with His arms open wide. What is your excuse for rejecting the love of God? If it is the care of the world, let it go. If it is the riches of this world, let them go. If it is a pleasure of this life, know this, God is better! Stop making excuses. The hope of heaven awaits you.
