Luke 14:7-11. We often feel the need to get ahead in this life. We cry, whine, or sometimes even fight to get our way as small children. As we grow up, forms of subtle and not-so-subtle manipulation of people and situations become more sneaky or deceptive. However, when trying to promote ourselves, our heart motives are always under the watchful eye of God. He sees the selfish, arrogant pride that wells up from the deepest part of our dark and hard hearts and it is an abomination to the LORD to glory for self-exaltation is forbidden and punished through the Bible. But, humility is acceptable and blessed by God. He will even lift up the humble servant to a place of honor, James the Lord's brother writes, "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." (James 4:10) Most of us have been raised to work and fight our way to the top. But of the follower of Jesus, we find our exaltation in our willful humiliation under the might hand of God. (1 Pe 5:5–7) Will you humble yourself before the Lord, or are you willing to take the painful risk that comes from God's mighty hand humbling you in your pride. It is your call.

Luke 14:1-6. As the ministry to Jesus was coming to its fateful climax, Jesus turned toward Jerusalem in order to fulfill all the promises of God to Israel as the Messiah. He was even warned by some Pharisees that Herod sought to take His life. Yet, Jesus was not going to be moved off mission. As He traveled towards the holy city of God, the conflict with most of the Jewish leaders continued to get more and more strained. Especially over Jesus' habit of healing people on the Sabbath. So, in desperation, one of the rulers of the Pharisees set a trap for Jesus at a feast. Why? To find something to accuse Jesus of wrongdoing. In this particular case, that of Sabbath-breaking. But Jesus sees right through the set up stops them in their track by doing the right and just on behalf of a sick man they have brought into their company. So here is a question for you and I. If we can do the right, compassionate, merciful, and just thing for someone who could never repay us and we did not do so, is not that actually breaking the commandment of God? Remember church; love is the fulfillment of all the commandments. Jesus lived this out for us to see so that we may do the same.

Luke 13:18-30. I am sure that most people, in some way or another, are hoping they, others they know personally, be it from work or school, have a right relationship with God. If you go to enough funerals in your lifetime, you could start to suspect one of three things are happening. First, everyone is going to heaven. Second, most people are strongly mistaking about salvation in Jesus, and finally, someone is not telling us the truth about heaven and hell. The reality is that Jesus says we are to strive to enter by the narrow gate while it is open, for there will come a day when the little gate to heaven will shut forever. When this happens, all help is lost. Those unwilling to go to Jesus and receive his love and grace that forgives our sins will find themselves cast out. But until that day comes, make every effort to put one's whole self into the task of listening and responding to God that you may enter the kingdom of God.
