Most of us have memories of our favorite television shows as kids. Of course, nothing was worse than having the show end on a cliffhanger right before the summer break. We would spend hours talking about it with friends, and then eventually, it would fade into distant thoughts as the summer became full of a new adventure, jobs, and relationships. But suddenly, school bells are ringing, and we begin to think about what happened to our favorite characters again. Did they live or die? Did they choose the right thing, or are they now the villain and have a new story arc? So as the weather cools, we sit down in front of the telly only to discover that the show has been canceled! Wait, what! Now we will never know what happens next! It causes us to muse over it in our minds and work out what we hope could have been. Well, Jesus leaves us with a doozy of a cliffhanger in the parable of the prodigal son. The older brother is given a choice to come and make merry with his father over his younger brother's return or remain angry and bitter. So what does he do? See what I did there?

Luke 15:1-10. The church should be a place where the community of disenfranchised, wounded, broken, and ashamed sinners can feel welcomed and loved. The church should be where the compassion, love, and truth of Jesus are found openly by all who enter there. Now it is relatively easy to unlock the doors of a building, and it is another thing entirely to open the hearts of the people that come into that building. An unlocked door lets anyone in, who will choose the journey and freely go through it, but finding closed and locked hearts that refuse to engage in the relational community of what should be the kingdom of God can be devastating. But what do lost souls often find inside? Unfortunately, they can find a place of judgment and further condemnation instead of the open arms and warm hearts of loyal followers of Jesus welcoming them to join the ongoing feast found at the table of God's extraordinary grace. Because every soul is important to God, we should rejoice over every sinner seeking God and every lost soul saved from sin. Why? Because Jesus does.
