It's been a long year (read: week) but we've made it through! Patrick has been playing Outer Wilds, and Austin isn't letting him get away with not talking about it on the podcast. Rob is finally becoming one with The Force in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and the crew gets into an EU hole. After the break, Austin and Cado are checking out the new season of Apex Legends, and getting really excited about the train.

The wait is finally over, Kentucky Route Zero is complete, and Austin, Patrick, and Cado are enthralled by its magical-realist setting, simple and beautiful imagery, and critique of capitalism through the lens of working class people. The crew digs into the game's seven year long release and their personal histories with the game. After the break, Cado and Patrick have played the Kingdom Hearts III Re: Mind DLC, and of course are still confused as to what the hell is going on. We may have to invite a certain Keyblade Master back for a future episode of Lore Reasons! Cado then takes us through Temtem, the totally-not-Pokémon game that has a lot of good ideas that should totally make their way back to Pokémon, and Patrick shouts out his new favorite Super Mario Maker 2 creator.

We're happy to have new Tech desk hire Gita Jackson joining us for her first Waypoint Radio! She's already hard at work on The Sims beat and comes to chat about the tiny house expansion to The Sims 4, Modelland, and Vanderpump Rules. Rob is chomping at the bit to talk about Total War: Three Kingdoms' new expansion, The Mandate of Heaven, and how it might give a new player a better sense of what to watch in a Total War game than the original campaign. Patrick has dipped his toes in FE: Tokyo Mirage Sessions Encore, and was instantly met with one of the hardest decisions in gaming. He's also playing Outer Wilds, which he totally didn't mean to talk much about, but what do you expect when you utter Austin Walker's activation phrase?
Discussed: The Sims 4 3:49, Kingdom Hearts Project Xehanort 35:39, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct 46:44, FE: Three Houses DLC 53:28, Kentucky Route Zero 54:59, Total War Three Kingdoms: Mandate of Heaven 1:01:40, Tokyo Mirage Sessions 1:20:41, Outer Wilds 1:23:06, Question Bucket 1:27:38

Disco Elysium, by and large, came out of nowhere for a lot of people, including us. A powerful story about the fallout of a failed political revolution and the people left in the rubble, portrayed through the lens of an alcoholic who’s just woken up from a bender so powerful it’s legitimately caused amnesia. And while a lot of games claim to embrace the idea of choice, few grant the player with the shocking granularity offered by Disco Elysium.
It’s also a hard game to talk about without really digging into what happens—because a lot happens. Disco Elysium might take place in a small location, relative to a lot of video games, but it’s utterly dense. It does not require more. Austin and I managed to tiptoe around a bunch of stuff on Waypoint Radio, but with both of us having recently finished the game, it seemed like a good idea to sit down and talk through the whole damn experience.

Rob was gifted a ticket to watch 2015's breakout musical Hamilton, and left with many questions. Austin and Cado join him to discuss the legacy and fandom around Hamilton, and how each of them has had different trajectories with the musical. After the break, the crew gets into a spoiler filled discussion of Rian Johnson's Knives Out, how it toes the line between upholding and shifting genre conventions, and how expertly weaved this story of privilege and racism was told in the frame of a murder mystery.

Somewhere, deep in each of our hearts, there's the fundamental truth to our inner-selves that takes the shape of a Pokémon. Lucky for us, we again have easy access to an official personality test that will reveal this form to us. We plumb the depths of Rob's soul with the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX intro, and finally answer who Rob's poké-sona is. We also talk about the games we've been playing, some news stories, and how barren the beginning of 2020 feels compared to last year. Stick around after the outro for some NFL talk (R.I.P. Ravens).
