Welcome to We Are the Worst!

In this week’s episode, we’ve got a historical death that is filled with poetic justice and we’ll travel to Ukraine to talk about a fairly recent set of murders committed by a pair of monsters. We also get our very first listener mail!

Dreia is up first and she’s going to tell us all about Clement Laird Vallandigham (probably pronounced ‘Vander-blar’) who was a famous lawyer during the Civil War, member of the Copperhead Democrats, and outspoken racist. Don’t worry, Vallandigham/Vanderblar gets what’s coming to him in the end.

After that, Maggie tells the story of the Dnipropetrovsk Maniacs who went on a 20+ killing spree in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in Ukraine between June and July of 2007. Luckily for Ukraine and the rest of the world, these monsters are now in prison where they belong.

Also, we’re going to tell you some stories – Maggie is covering the serial killer Jerry Brudos and Dreia will tell us the creepy story of the Seguin Lighthouse and how you really should learn more than one song on the piano if you’re going to be cooped up in a lighthouse with your husband for years.

We aren’t womansplaining this week, but we are woman heavy in this episode and we’re not sorry about it. Dreia has the honor of covering our sadder topic of the week and she does a great job of it when she discusses Spain’s first ever same-sex marriage. Listen, these women wanted to marry each other, and they found a way to trick everyone into believing that they weren’t actually two women getting married. Maggie’s story starts off pretty sad but has a happy ending – she’s going to tell you about Madame C.J. Walker and how she was born into poverty but became the first black female millionaire in US history. We’re pretty into her.

Did anyone have any idea that we may be nerds? We might just be realizing it now. Does anyone actually know where Dreia lives? Maggie sure doesn’t. But that’s off topic – this week, we’re discussing Keith Sapsford and how teenagers don’t always make the best decisions as well as the lead mask case and how everyone in the 1960s and 70s was high all the time. Come listen for all the fun and maybe we can figure out together where Dreia actually lives.

Have you ever seen a camel running? Let’s talk about how fun it would be to have that same running camel dressed completely in armor as a… BATTLE CAMEL! That’s right folks, she’s going for the bath salts murders – otherwise known as the story of Austin Harrouff, so get ready to be sad. After that, Maggie gets her crime scene kitchen in order just in time to bring up the mood with the story of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker – the badass Civil War surgeon who refused to conform to society’s expectations, was a staunch feminist, and was the only female recipient of the Medal of Honor. She’s our new hero for sure.
